Call Me Crazy But I Love Being in the Mall on Christmas Eve!

Call me crazy but I love being in the mall on Christmas Eve!

It has nothing to do with shopping or buying last minute gifts and everything to do with “feeling the spirit”.  It all began when I first started working and I was less than 5 minutes away from the Galleria in Houston (mycrowd Mother Ship).   You know how it is when you’re in an office... you shop when you can and often that would be nights, lunch hours and weekends.

Christmas Eve always meant a trip to the mall.  Everyone thought I was nuts!  But I actually liked it.

And... soon a tradition was born.

I would often put off buying that one last item as an excuse to be in the mall.  Why?....  Why do I want to fight the madness?  Am I so unorganized that I have to go because I haven’t finished my shopping?

No.... after all, as long as there is Amazon.... I can always get my gift purchasing done.

No... I go because I love to drink in the Christmas spirit.  I ask you, what other time of year can you find everyone in such a cheerful mood? !

I love seeing the dads out with their children trying to find mom a gift.

I love having a CHEERFUL sales person smile and wish me a Happy Holiday.

Everyone is in good spirits.... and maybe I just hope that I can bottle enough of this up to take me into the next year.

I worked retail part time for a while several years ago. Christmas Eve was a special time. Most of the shoppers are male and many of them stop off for drinks early in the process.

My sister and I used to go to the mall on Black Friday not because we needed anything. We had finished Christmas shopping before Thanksgiving, but so we could watch all the other people go crazy. Smug, but true. I wouldn't hesitate to go to the mall Christmas Eve but I am too busy with church and cooking.  Enjoy the sights, sounds and bustle of Christmas eve in the mall.

Hello  Crazy!   When I was in school - (and I was in school a loooong time) I used to have no choice but to wait until the last minute.  Exams were generally finished around the 21st/22nd. When I taught as an adjunct it was worse because I was very busy AFTER the exams were done - though I had a bit more time before them.  Often I would have to get grades in within 48 hours or the final final.   That can be tough.  So I have had my share of racing around the mall or local shops right before Christmas - And my answer to that is NO THANK YOU.  Today I do have some last minute gifts and I am DREADING IT. I had better get going!

Kathy, what Mall this year/ South of Delray or North? I guess it really doesn't matter. The pushing the shoving, and the last minute frenzy is priceless. It may be better than the local Comedy Club.

You're not crazy, everybody is different, some require physical stimulation, others mental, yet what ever works for you and others is fine, so Happy Holidays and have a great time with family and friends.

I agree! Although I've never been to a mall on Christmas Eve - it would just be too darned far to drive, especially in the snow - I enjoy being there during the Christmas season.

People just seem friendlier. I love seeing the decorations. I love hearing the music.I love looking at all the Christmasy things I could buy if I wanted to.

Yesterday I made a run to town for groceries - and everyone seemed a little nicer. Even other drivers were being considerate.

You aren't crazy - you're just good at seeing the spirit and soaking it up.

I know what you mean, Kathy.  I finished up yesterday with a couple little things and groceries, but I try to avoid the busiest places.

Merry Christmas!

From one crazy to another - I agree wholeheartedly!  Christmas Eve is often my ONLY trip to the mall during the season - never shopping for anything in particular, just roaming around and drinking it in.  No agenda, no "to do's".  It's like a 'play date' for ME - getting ready to head out there now =)

Merry Christmas to you!

I use to LOVE going and walking around the mall. It was a place that gave me solitude from a long day at work. Somehow, I started to enjoy spending days there on end less and less.  After years of not leaving until the last store was closed, finding myself loving the crowd on Christmas Eve; I became exhausted over the whole idea of it all, and stopped to realize the craziness behind it. I would love to be a part of the running around chaos, at the moment its just not in me!

If I could have just have some of your enthusiasm!

Wishing you the best for 2012!  Happy Holidays and Merry Christmas!

Dear Kathy,

It might be festive to go to the mall, but I do not have time to go. Maybe next year.

We've been in the Houston Galleria a couple of time.  My wife and I love going on our exercise walks in the enclosed malls.  We live near a smaller one, Windward Mall in Kaneohe.  Our largest center is Ala Moana, which is one of top ten largest in the USA.  We enjoy the store decorations as well as the people.

KATHY!  Creative title caught my eye, then made me think. I know exactly what you mean...while I've never planned it out that way, if I do find myself needing to do some shopping that day, I feel like I have walked away better for the experience. Think it has to do with your mindset and expectations going into it. Hope you had a wonderful Christmas, and that the trajectory continues in the New Year!

BARFF- same here

Donna- I wouldn't blame you for not wanting to set foot in a mall and I'm so glad you can use some of the DVD's...Enjoy!

Janice- I either get there first thing or valet park!!

Anna- well it's the day after Christmas so I hope you got everything done!

Janet- it really is... just don't go late in the day!

Toni- oh I have a bunch of them!

Ann- that is so cute!!!! You could write a blog about it!

Karen- My motto is hit the stores when they open, then I'm outta there!

Patty- yes, that works for me!  CRAZY!!

Joetta- it also depends upon which stores you go to.  The malls are usually fun because of the variety of "good cheer."

Sylvie- rule of thought for next year.... make sure you don't "have" to buy anything in particular.... get there early and bring a smile!

Dana- I try to pack everything into Christmas Eve... cooking, the mall and being with friends and family.

Ruthmarie- and aren't we grateful for the Internet!

Winston- Town Center Mall in Boca!  You can watch ladies carrying their little dogs in LV dog carriers... people in shorts in December and lots and lots of people!

Kimo- well I've never said I wasn't crazy!!! LOL

Marte- thank you!  Yes there are a few crazies out there but if you know what to look for you can soak in the spirit.

Beth- we were out for a drive for some fresh air yesterday (Christmas) and the beach and the restaurants along A1A were packed.

Jana- YEA!!!! Another Crazy. Hope you had a great day at the mall!

Cynthia- OK... next year you call me the week before Christmas and I'll give you some of my enthusiasm.

Dorte- It is a busy time especially if you're having family in!

Jim- I actually didn't need anything Christmas Eve but just went!

Bruce- Ah... the Mother Ship of Malls(the Galleria) love it.  We have many here who walk inside the malls.

Marie- thank you... maybe I'm not so crazy! Hope you had a good holiday!

Linda- Bet you know the Galleria!! Happy Holidays.

I love the vibe of the big shops on Christmas Eve (the crowds, not so much!).  We went to Macy's in Herlad Square just before Christmas, walked around Rockefeller Center, and browsed at the outdoor shops in Bryant Park that have sprung up around the ice skating rink.  I love this time of year in the city!

Hi Kathy, being at the mall Christmas Eve was a tradition my daughter  and I had when she was growing

up. To watch people frantic at the last minute looking for gifts, she always enjoyed.

Then we would go home and prepare the family evening meal.

Best wishes for a happy, healthy 2012.

I hope you had a Merry Christmas Kathy! I agree with you, the malls on Christmas eve day can be nice. I have not been to a mall or even a store at all this season, however. I have gradually over the years been doing my Christmas gift shopping online, giving me more time and energy to get all my other preparations done. This year is the first that I did not go to any store whatsoever! I have to say, while my online shopping certainly was convenient, I did not feel much Christmas spirit ;-( Next year I may try to get to a local mall on Christmas Eve, if only to get into the mood! I also think it will be a perfect opportunity to find some good deals on some gifts for myself! Happy New Year all!

Mike and Kate- NYC would be a perfect place to experience Christmas Eve.

Gene- had a great one and I hope your holiday was all you wanted it to be.

Bob- yes.. I am crazy... I love crowds around the holidays.

Irene- That's such a nice memory for you and your daughter.

Rhonda-I so agree with you. I've did most of my shopping online and you do miss out on some of the Christmas spirit.  There's something about going in, buying the gift then walking out knowing that you've just marked one item off your list!
