That rust is a sign that something needs to be done. Correct it early.

Do you have rust streaks running down the outside of your property? You may have an idea where it is coming from but aren’t real sure if it really is a problem. I am pretty sure that the rust is a sign that you need to do some sort of repair There are a number of reasons for the rust, but all of them will require at least a little bit of work.

Rust on siding near gutter.

As a rule you should not have rust running down the outside of your home, but the remedy may be simple. For example, if you have rust at the end of a gutter, you may just need to seal the end of the gutter. The seal at the end cap may just be allowing rusty water from inside the gutter to seep  out and down the wall.

Streaks from rusty nails may be a sign that the wrong nails were used. Galvanized nails are recommended for an exterior application. It may be time to prime and paint the exterior. Paint will wear over time, if the paint has been lost at the nail head, the nail will rust.

Rust found on a wrought iron fence will require a good sanding (or grinding) to remove the rust, a quality rust preventing primer and paint can make the iron look as good as new. If this is overlooked, the fence will soon become weak and fail.

This are just a few examples of finding rust at you home. All of them can be addressed by the homeowner if caught early. Each can also become a bigger problem if not corrected. If you see rust, make an effort to correct the problem. If you are not sure how to correct the rust problem, contact a contractor in your area.

Good morning Tom.  You're so right that solving the issue early will save a lot of money in the long run.  Good tip to look for easy visual signs.

I would also think the gutter may be missing a kick out flashing. A detail most often over looked.

Tom, it is cheaper to seal a leak than to replace the whole rain gutter if not repaired early. Good point!

This is a good awareness post plus I learned something. The right nails to use for one thing and on the wrought iron, you have to keep your eye on that because when it rusts, it rusts really well...thank you

Tom, it's amazing how a nuisance can become a big problem if not addressed. Good advice here.

Rust is progressive Roger, if not treated correctly it will grow.

I think that most problems can be found just by looking for the signs. "Does this look normal?", should be the question we ask ourselves.

Thanks Debbie.

An early repair makes a lot of sense if done early Michael.

Hi Tom. Putting off these simple repairs with rust, will cost us dearly down the road. It always recommended to address these issues as soon as possible.

Hi Tom - This another of those "pay be now or pay me later" things. And later always costs more.  I've had listing agents try to tell me not to worry about things like that, and when they do, I advise my clients to be wary that what looks insignificant might be a bigger problem.  Another reason why I always tell my buyers to have a home inspection.

It may be recommended but getting owners to follow through... that's the challenge Jerry.

Thanks for the feedback.

I think the home inspection is very important, it gives the owners a third party qualified opinion.

Thanks Susan.
