Florida Hurricane Tips- Have a “Ready To Go” Box Even If You Don’t Live In Florida

June 1st marks the beginning of the Hurricane season and in a previous post I listed 14 Tips you can do now to prepare for Hurricane Season.  One item was to put together a “Ready To Go” Bag so that if you needed to leave your home or area with short notice you would have with you some very necessary items.
Make a To Go Box
You don’t have to be in a hurricane prone area to have one of these.  When we first moved near DC I not only had one in my home but one for each of our vehicles.  (I left out of the car bag some of the items with personal information ).  What if you couldn’t back into your neighborhood or street because of a fire or other emergency?  What if your own home caught fire?

Fortunately with hurricanes, we have advanced notice, but having this To-Go bag is helpful nevertheless.  You’ll want a backpack or duffle bag that is lightweight and large enough to hold your items:

1.  Flashlight with extra batteries
2.  Portable radio with batteries

3.  Small First Aid Kit, bug spray
4.  Miners head light ( allows you to be hands free)

5.  Emergency cash and quarters- make sure you have small bills

6.  Road maps, paper and pencil

7.  List of phone numbers such as friends, relatives, insurance  companies, physicians. (when’s the last time you actually dialed a phone number?)

8. Extra clothing and sturdy shoes, extra contacts or glasses.

9.  List of medications, contacts, solution

         10.  Knife, lighter, duct tape, large trash bag, toilet paper
         11.  Some water and food, can opener, utensils
         12.  Toothbrush and toothpaste
first aid kit          13.  Current photos of you and family members

These are suggestions and of course you will want to tailor it to fit your needs as well as the needs of your family*.

* Don’t forget your pets.  You’ll need to put together a bag for Rocky too:

* an extra leash

* small bowl, can opener

* medications

* copy of their vaccination history

*  extra food and water

There will be some items that you will want to grab at the last minute so the best thing to do is make a list of those items so you won’t be running around the house in a panic.  These include items such as your laptop, thumb drives, cell phones, chargers, etc.

It has been suggested that you go to each room and pick one object from there that you would want to take... a special photo, something irreplaceable.

Keep this list by your bag so that you will know what  else you need.

Likely you will never have to use this bag but why take that chance.

Fernando- exactly, now with cloud storage you can make sure your documents are safe. BARFF-I know what you'd put in! Don't know about the other. Winston- for sure. Last time you couldn't find a room any where near Orlando. Bobbie-I think it gives you peace of mind too. Joe- I read that there was a man in New Orleans who left his driver's license behind when he evacuated. Richard-we had one in case we got caught in bad weather and because we were so close to DC. We've been in DC when they cleared the Capitol bldg. Dorie- my friend's house burned last year and they were able to grab what they needed but you never know. Barbara-Jo- we've learned being in FL,haven't we! Kristin-thank you! Some days the brain just comes to a dead stop!

Kathy --- wise words regardless of where you live: at home, in the car, at the office.  Every April is Earthquake Awareness Month --- so your tips are a great everyday reminder.  Disasters can take many forms -- be prepared.

Fred- Hey... now I've never been to Victoria!!!  It really isn't that bad because you do know when one is coming.

Michael- now I would be more fearful of earthquakes.  No advanced warning.

Janis- I wonder if anyone actually would put one together?  Thanks, Janis.

Good afternoon Kathy, New England certainly learned this again last year as the Hurricane did not pack damaging winds but flooded states all the way to Canada. Have a great Saturday

Absolutely excellent idea... Kathy!  I've also gotten in the habit of putting my cell phone, purse and car keys right next to my bed so I don't have to go searching for them in the middle of the night if I'm ever forced to leave my home quickly!

I saw from another post that there was a Hurricane Convention down there.  I guess after what happened, it is best to be prepared.  Great tips for those in hurricane territory.

Great advice and great list of items to include in an emergency kit. We don't get hurricanes here, of course, but after the Japanese earthquake last year my kids and I were inspired to put together a kit for our family. Everyone should have one!

Scott- that it did.  I had friends in Vermont who had serious flooding.

Mel- great minds do think alike.  I put my purse and cell phone by my bed but may have to add the car keys.

Alexandra- thank you.  Have a Great Sunday!!!

Jennifer- I think we all learn from each one.  We've been told to have at least 3 days supply of water and food, but think about being without power for 2 weeks!

Gretchen- And it was good of you to get the kids involved!   You don't have to be in hurricane territory to have one.

Kathy,

This is a really good post. It doesn't matter how long one has lived in Florida (or in a hurricane-prone area) we still must get prepared in advance. Once a storm is the horizon, the supplies quickly disappear from the stores.

Hi Kathy, I would add some hand sanitizer too. You could use it to wash hands or utensils. What do you think?

I hope I never have to use one, but I think it's a great idea to have.  As soon as I'm done moving in and deciding what to keep and what to yard sale....I'll put an emergency bag together.  Bookmarked!  Thanks!

Good morning Ms. Kathy although I know your information is something I should take and get a box to place all the items in I just haven't done it and knowing my mental state will probably not do it.  I know I'll pay for it sometime in the future

Patty- I'm always amazed at all of the people at Home Depot or Lowes trying to get plywood cut at the last minute.  Why make yourself so crazy!

Debbie- absolutely!  I keep a big box of baby wipes in my box.  Hand sanitizer.. yes!

Sharon-Larry laughs at me and says I took my Girl Scout training a little too seriously.

Lou- I want to know that I have everything I need. I'm a little OCD about that.

Sharon- I know.. you hope that you can laugh down the road and say the box or bag just sat there and never was used.  That's a good thing.

David- When you're trying to get your family out and secure the house, it's so easy to forget something.

James- and weren't you a former policeman?? Get that box together! LOL
