It’s Not Just Palm Trees and Bird of Paradise Flowers in the Fall Here in Carlsbad California

Many think we don’t have a change of seasons.

You’re wrong.

True, they are more subtle, but it’s not just palm trees (which don’t change all that much) and bird of paradise flowers in the fall here in Carlsbad.

 Fall Leaves in Carlsbad California

The bird of paradise flowers bloom for long periods and have a second round in the fall and into the winter.

Take a look at this tree, around the corner from where I live in Carlsbad (taken yesterday).

Does THAT look like your notion of Southern California?

It’s true that we are pretty green most of the year, but there are a good number of deciduous trees that turn colors and lose their leaves like they do elsewhere. Of course they do that when it is in the 70s and 80s as it has been in the last few weeks but who can argue with that?

We’ll see snow on the distant mountains (1 – 2 hours away) soon, but I’ll take the palm trees and bird of paradise flowers in the fall here in Carlsbad.

Your Carlsbad colors are beautiful year round. Love the changing leaves in 70 degree weather. Thanks for sharing a bit of your beauty.

Jeff, isn't it beautiful? I love it! I remember in Arizona I was dying for a change in season, I was missing fall and winter. Then it rained one time and the desert came alive. Then it snowed....

Oh, so gorgeous! I'll take the palm trees and bird of paradise flowers too... as I face the 20 something degree weather outside my windows in the mornings. We'll be grateful for 50's by week's end. Enjoy!

I was talking about this for northern California just a couple of days ago.  We actually have quite a few trees here including maples that drop their leaves just like on the East Coast.  So, we get nice color along with the usual cool temps and rain (doing that today).

I do remember a few trees turning and losing their leaves - but it's a rare sight indeed.  Thank goodness for palms and birds of paradise.
