The One Thing- One Chapter Was Enough for Me!

The One Thing - One Chapter Was Enough for Me!

I read Chapter One  of The One Thing by Gary Keller with Jay Papasan and could have The One Thingstopped right there.  No, it’s not what you think!  The reason I could have stopped is because that one chapter was speaking directly to me and said it all.

At any time my mind is very much like the experience you would  get when you first walk into Disneyworld, the world’s largest FAO Schwarz or Tiffany’s....... eyes bouncing everywhere never quite settling on one just one thing.  Welcome to my world.

It’s always been about Focus and drilling down to THE ONE THING … something I have to do if I want to get anything done.  And I am a big believer in the importance of focusing.... on your goals, your tasks and even the way we look at things.

Viewing things- I don’t like heights or roller coasters but I’m learning that if I can Go Small and Focus on  just what’s ahead and nothing else I am able to keep my eyes open, never waiver and make it to the end of the ride.

Blogging-Now here is where Chapter One is giving me the nugget I needed.  Unfortunately I write and speak like the description with which I opened....bouncing everywhere never quite settling on one thing.  (just ask my husband.... just read this post!)  Every post I write is like an exercise in focus and keeping it to Just One Thing.

Work-I am IT for my company so all projects, marketing, planning etc go through me.  There are times when I’m overwhelmed by what I want to do.... Google+, LinkedIn, get into video, design new marketing material... the list goes on.  Consequently I’ve taken nibbles at each one but not done one well.

one thingTasks-I have learned to be a list maker and nothing gives me more satisfaction than being able to scratch something off my list.  When I get overwhelmed by what I need to do, I’ve learned that I have to break things down into smaller tasks then check them off after I complete each one.

Staging-
before I begin a vacant staging, furniture, accessories, lamps, artwork, linens are swirling around in my head.  There’s so much I want to do in each room but there’s the budget the think of.  Again... Go Small.  For me it means choosing one room and deciding what will go where and getting that done before I move on to the next.

What has all this got to do with The One Thing?  I’ve discovered that I’m not crazy, scattered or “all over the place”.... well I actually am.  But so are the rest of you!  We’re all bombarded with ideas, tasks, requests, questions, etc. and we’re all just trying to get to the finish line.  What Gary and Jay have done is given us “permission” to take it all at our own pace... Just One Thing at a time.

The One Thing> Focus> Going Small = Success

There’s still time to enter The One Thing Challenge.  It ends tonight, April 29, at 11:59pm  PST.

I’ve discovered that I’m not crazy, scattered or “all over the place”.... well I actually am.  But so are the rest of you! ..........Brilliant statement BARFF, and so true. We just need to focus and take one thing at a time.

Hi Kathy - in our multi-tasking, want-it-now world it just the thought of focus can be stressful.  By putting tasks into smaller easier to digest pieces, it becomes a bit(notice I say a bit) easier.

Hi Kathy,

It is very hard to accomplish anything without focus.  If you want to go above and beyond additional focus is required.

Good morning Kathy, I have put this book on my reserve list at the library and can't wait to sink my teeth into it.  Hoping that the first chapter will say it all to me as well!!!!

Kathy~ I'm so glad I read your post. Now I know I'm not alone in the world. I bounce all over the place too. I'm distracted by shiny things. Focusing is a challenge for me. I was all set to write about multi-tasking, but now I see, it's really about the ONE thing I should be focused on!

Lisa- I admire people who are so focused and for whom writing comes easy.

Dorie- you have no idea how many post-it notes I can go through!

Pam- I have learned that much to my chagrin, I have to choose one thing then tackle it.

Lenn- as in trap or skeet shooting!!!!

Debbie- and even with all of our electronics, I still use a small post-it note for my top priority items.

Barbara-thank you so much.  I do think that where being able to “multi-task” was viewed as some sort of achievement in the past, the reality is that it can’t be done successfully on certain tasks.

Toni- I’m seeing that it does indeed take practice and discipline.

Valerie- often I think we are.  My eyes jump all over the place when I go into Pottery Barn, for example.

BARFF- there you go... I’ve admitted I’m crazy!

Michael- focus is what we help our clients do when we provide a consultation.

Merline- you have to.  If you look at highly successful people they will focus to the extent they are called “driven.”

Joanna- it will, trust me.  I applaud you for using your library!!!!

Janice- many thanks.  When I first view a vacant home I have to train myself to focus on one room at a time, which is why I may take over 100 photos just of the “before “ image.

Kristin- well, we all are to an extent, aren’t we?   It’s just nice to know we have company!

Donna- it was hard for me to “focus” on just deciding which chapter to write on.

Long term success requires building on individual smaller "wins" over time.  It's rare that anyone just has one big thing.  It's all the little things that build up to the bigger overall win.

Kathy, I can relate. There is so much I want to do and I have to try to master one at a time. It is so tempting to get off target.

Kathy, You said it. It is so tuff these days with the constant changing technology not to be all over the place. Learn a little bit here, learn a little bit there.  I feel like that too, jack of all trades and master of none.  Gotta find a way to become a master of at least one.  I think I need a personal technology trainer. LOL. Great post. Should be a featured one. Suggested. I for one believe you write some of the best posts! Love them all.

I hear you Kathy and I have my FOCUS targeted on 1 thing and 1 thing only...

I AM GOING TO BECOME an MREA this year for the first time.

For those that don't know that is a Millionaire Real Estate Agent and that was Gary's 2nd book.

When I went into this year, in November I did business planning and planned for a 500K year, but it appears this will be shattered in the first half.

I have waited a lifetime for the ability to earn everything I want and it is here.  Sit back, watch, and enjoy the ride.

BARFF- true, I was just hiding the fact that you too are crazy from you.  (JK)

Lenn- can you imagine what would happen if you didn’t focus.

Bryan-thank you for the feature in my favorite group!

Debbie-you have no idea!

Sharon- see, we’re all alike!

Bobbie- you are so sweet, and I thank you!  I agree, sometimes I think I need a Social Media coach.

Anna- I’ve always thought that some of the most successful people are those who are focused and single minded.

Kevin- good for you!  I have no doubt that you will make it either!
