Squirrels can do some real damage too!

While opening a decorative column surrounding this 6”x6” post in an apartment community in Cameron Park, we came across this at the base of the post. It seems the squirrels have been chowing at the base of this post for some time. Luckily it was discovered before something really bad happened.  J

It's amazing the type of damage they can do. You wouldn't think so because they are small.

Good morning Tom. I have experienced squirrel damage in my own homes several times. Squirrels can eat through a building and did in my two family. Not an easy fix.

We had a home inspection done where the inspector took a picture in the attic....and turned out to be a squireel family portrait ...Yikes....yes...there was an amendment for immediate eviction !

Tom, I have often wondered if we should list squirrels as wood destroying organisms. This may the confirmation they need.

Hi Tom,

Yes they can and a lot too.

Looks like the post had been a scratching post for a porcupine. LOL

Have a great day in Sacramento.

Best, Clint McKie

Tom -- did not realize they were into wood that much.  Maybe the decorative covering made it more tasty.

That looks a lot like a post on my daughter's playset where a lawn guy thought it was funny to chip away at it with his weed whacker.  He got fired, after he replaced the post.

They are small Debbie, but given enough time and large number of squirrels, they get stuff done.  :)

Sheila - It can be a mess.

Barbara - We were all surprised to see this that day.

Sally & David - A lot can happen in some places of the home and we do not always know it.

It does appear to be wood destroying Donald.  :)

Wow Tom! You have made me second guess my feeding the squirrels!  I love watching them play around the yard but if this is the damage they can do, maybe I am making a mistake of encouraging them to our place. I would never have thought a squirrel did this damage!

Tom:

That is amazing and scary. We have those critters running round our yard. Will have to set some traps.

Al and Peggy - I'm not sure about the squirrel habits. Maybe feeding them forces them to chew at someone elses place.  :)

Alan - Or at least make it less friendly.  :)

Tom, around here, squirrels like to chew on the flashing around the chimneys which contains lead. No wonder they are all running around like crazy!

Tom, I know they can be very destructive because they uproot my flowers in my pots on the deck. I can't keep enough cayenne on them.
