Thought for the Day, How would you repond to no lights for 3 days?

Question for the Day, How would you respond to no lights for 3 days?

Many of us experienced this scenario along the east coast during and after Hurricane Sandy. Thousands went for days without electricity, heat or running water. In fact there are still many rebuilding.

If you were in a similar position where you had to experience at least 3 days or perhaps even more without light, how do you think you would respond to a situation like that? Would it be all fear based or would you let go of fear and rationalize your thoughts to see past the darkness to see solutions? Do you think you would become a leader in helping others get through that time period?

Some thoughts I have had:

  • Invest in solar powered electricity, such as with lights, lamps, etc.  So even if the lights do go out at night, you still have a some form during the evening time.
  • Learning from Hurricane Sandy, when gas became limited people naturally freaked out.  Governor Cuomo at first said there was no need for regulations in the sense of Even and Odd days with who could refuel with gas.  No guidance equals panic for those who are consumed with fear of lack.  Eventually he got the picture and set up the new rule and things naturally panned out. So with that said, from day one of no lights, have a system put in place with collecting gas (even and odds of the license plates) so people do not freak out as they did during the after math of Hurricane Sandy which then provides an efficient sharing process.
  • Only use your car if you absolutely have too.  If you are more then capable of riding a bike when appropriate, ride your bike and save the gas for times when it's truly needed. At the same time you getting in some exercise.
  • have a discussion with your neighbors so if this ever happens again, people mentally become comfortable with it and even have a simple game plan already set up with understanding how to respond vs react. At the same time you are creating awareness and creating a supportive system within your block.

I'm always interested in hearing how others would respond to questions that reach beyond their comfort zone. Do you have any tips or advice that you would suggest or thoughts on how you may feel?

For one night you can actually make it kind of fun with he kids, turn it into kind of a camping at home trip, but 2 days or more gets really difficult.  I have never had to face that long without power but I suspect I would discover all of the things in our day to day life we take for granted when faced with this situation.

Hey Richie, very true and thank you for sharing :)

Hey Scott, our ancestors survived so I always wonder why modern day people feel like it's the end of the world...haha.  It's not.  It's all in how your perceive and respond to the situation. I can say this, you do learn to prioritize your time quickly and understand what's truly important in your life.  It also seemed to open up better communication with people, like when we all used to talk face to face and not via text or facebook. it also teaches you how to be resourceful and flexible.

I am prepared for that possibility, as I live in a much more rural area, as my generator is always ready to go.

You post make such great sense, living where you live. Some preparation is always necessary.

Make it a great week!

Laura- we lived without power for 3 days during one of the hurricanes here.  The biggest inconvenience would be losing the Internet and also rationing our smartphone/computer time.  We have solar chargers, flashlights, those miner's headlamps and books.  Even though I have books on Kindle, no power, means eventually no reading.
