Fall 2013 - A time to celebrate in Clark County, WA
So long summer, howdy autumn. Today is the first day of fall in the year 2013. In Clark County, WA the sunrise was at 6:58 AM and the sun will set at 7:08 PM. The days and nights are nearly equal right now.
This seasonal change is called equinox and it happens twice a year, around March 21st and and September 21st. The sun crosses the celestial equator, moving from the Northern Hemisphere to the Southern hemisphere, and visa versa.
Equinox is derived from the Latin term for equal night. After Sunday, the sun will shine more on the southern half of our planet. The sun will continue on this path southward for the next three months, until “solstice” brings us winter on December 21st.
However, let’s just slow down and appreciate this season for a time! All around us, nature is reacting. Birds and butterflies are migrating, other critters are putting on their winter coats. Trees and plants are ending this year’s cycle of growth.
Soon, the deciduous trees will give us an annual splash of color with leaves turning rich shades of yellow, orange and red. Let’s hope the rains and winds hold off a bit in the Northwest to allow for an excellent show this year.
