PEOPLE STILL ASK THIS QUESTION

By
Real Estate Broker/Owner with people first...then business Ran Right Realty 636943 licensed to thrill

Do you own your own home? This is asked as opposed to "do you rent". When the the person answers...I OWN, they swell with pride and accomplishment. Their whole demeanor changes. It lights up, has a confidence and a display of "I did it" aura to it. I'm somebody. Next time this comes up or you ask, watch this because people who own Real Estate are very happy to do so

HQ

Why is that? Can it be a statement of accomplishment? I came, I saw and I purchased? I own therefore I am? Or, can it be the realization of having a permanent place to lay ones head sort of like a head quarters or place of operations, rest and security. Having a home is part of our culture, history and strong urge to NEST

A PERSON OF PROPERTY

How about it is the beginning of a person having something in the form of wealth that they believe will enable them to either live comfortably or pass on an asset to a loved one or family remember? It denotes a person who accomplished something and it comes with acceptable boasting rights

PIGGY BANK PRINCIPAL

In Real Estate, there is no denying that after several years, equity, appreciation and values all manifest themselves and a homeowner can not only recapture their investment but make money as well. Add to the fact that you have to live somewhere and it makes sense to own something for a length of time...Rent gives no returns but mortgage payments do

INDEPENDENCE

I have seen where people who live alone and enjoy it eventually may have to move into an assisted living care facility at some point. Having had a home for years and then selling it or renting it out may offset those expenses thus making it a viable option. It enables them to maintain a certain quality of life about themselves

LITERALLY OWNED

Honorable mention to those that literally OWN their homes outright. They pay nothing but taxes and insurance, light repairs, and utilities. Their income can be moderate because their expenses are reduced. We forget that this works very well and if one leaves the purchase alone and is faithful to pay into the concept...it pays you back

RENT OR OWN STIGMA

I also have noticed that some people when asked if they OWN or RENT if they answer RENT, may have a sense of failure or shame feeling causing them to have to explain why they rent. In America, owning and renting means something to the ones that do it and the ones that ask about it.

YOU ARE BEING ASSESSED

Today, when someone is asking or answering this question, no doubt there is a story that accompanies the answer. People have the need to explain and if not that, they cannot help but recall why they rent or don't own. It remains a part of our culture. We use it to define ourselves OR be defined by it

Renting and owning....It goes on

Love this one.  My 96 year old grandfather, who paid off his home 30 years ago, still has the payoff confirmation letter from his lender back then framed in his kitchen.  Nothing by pride.

Great post. However, don't forget that we are starting to have to deal with Gen X and Y, and that they are often happier with a more "mobile" lifestyle, without some of the "traditional" values we hold so dear. The ability to move on a moments notice, without being tied down, whether it be a home, a job or even owning a car is starting to be more dear than homeownership. This post may actually be significantly different 5-10 years from now! I hope that the other benefits that ownership brings to the community somehow remain...

Jeanne...Yes to your worthy comment. Many years ago, my younger brother did a major business deal that allowed him to pay off his home. Richie,

Great Post!  Owning a home gives a person/persons a sense of pride after all isn't it the "American
Dream"?  When I ask do you own a home it can lead to more questions.  My goal isn't just to ask they question but, to take the change to help future buyers know more about how they can reach their goal of owning a home.

Richie, I would say that in the past there was always a sense of pride, an "I did it" attitude and rightfully so.  In the past 5-6 years I think we might also get another response with it depending on the situation economically, financially, etc.  I still believe it is the American Dream and something to be proud of.

On great perspective on owning versus renting. Owning is still very much the "American Dream" not realizable in many other places.

Home ownership has been a problem in tha past few years since it hurts mobility...people out of work can not easily sell their home and move to where there are available jobs.

DECENT RAIN

Hello Kelly...Your comment caused me to consider the 1950's and when depcited, it was always a neighborhood or a community of homes and of course...homeowners. Pride is present...

Ralph...It's true and get this...Sometimes the person asking makes a judgment on the spot if you say renting and soemehow the air fills with ....that aint good or that is not the response I was looking for

Nina...yes and people want to know...Did you find and activate the dream? If not, why not..? like if there was something wrong with you...That means people who did.. have something right with them

I agree that mobility is a major reason to rent as oppossed to owning. The other main reason would be credit issues that would be an impediment to getting a loan. I am a strong advocate of owning your assets and not renting, but some reasons make it impractible.
