Why Should I Hire A Forester To Sell My Timber?  Q&A#4forest

After being asked this question several times this week, it may be time to repost this blog.

Over the past 25 years I cannot count the number of clients who have come to me after learning the answer to this question the hard way.

Many people feel that they can do the job themselves, or they have a friend or relative who is a logger and offers to help them out.  They all end up gaining a small fraction of what their timber is worth and to add insult to injury their forest is seriously degraded in the process.

Forest

A forester knows how to;

  • Expertly market your timber to get you up to 1000% more money for your trees!
  • Mark the correct trees resulting in an increase in the value of the residual forest rather than a forest degradation!
  • Plan the timber sale so that the land will not be harmed from excessive rutting, damage to streams, and damage to residual trees.
  • Structure and administer a contract so that the clients’ interests are protected both financially and environmentally.
  • Determine which loggers are good and which are not.
  • Get the loggers to follow the rules, and not try to get away with shortcuts and extra trees.
  • Plan a timber sale for maximum Wildlife habitat.

When you go to court over something that may be worth $10K-100k, do you hire an Attorney or do you do it yourself, or hire a friend or relative.

forest

Most foresters handle hundreds of timber sales, and most do it yourselfers handle one, who do you think knows what they are doing, and which one do you think that the loggers will try to take advantage of?

If you care about your forest and your pocketbook, hire an experienced Consulting Forester.

Bob, this is good advice!  A friend in Michigan recently did this the right way, as you suggested.

Bob,

This is great and can be used as a useful analogy for many other thing we should leave to the pros.

Good morning Bob. This one is a no brainer, take from someone who has made the mistake of attempting to negotiate for timber without having a clue of what I had.

Great job with your post.

Hi Bob... Kind of reminds me of a question agents often hear.... Why should I hire an agent to sell my house... I think #2 hit the nail on the head... If one wants a professional job done then one needs to hire a professional and who better than you to sell their TIMBER.... Happy Day

I'll never forget a client who purchased a to-be-built house on a fully wooded lot.  I suggested that he get an estimate for harvesting the growth.

Ignoring my advice, he simply hired a bull dozer operator who did what bull dozer operators do, leveled the lot, loaded the logs and dumped them.  Then, of course, burning the residue.

An informal estimate from a forester I recommended thought he lost about $75-100K by not harvesting.

Oh well.  I still sold the house to him.

Neither he nor the lot owner had a clue about the value of the trees.

Bob - I can certainly appreciate what you are saying.  Managing rather that hacking away.  That is why I have a certifiedn arborist trim the trees on my property rather than the person that cuts the lawn.

Bob-Yours sounds like a really specialized field that can offer additional revenue opportunities for the land owners. It would be wise for them to use your expertise.

We had a forester come onto some property we own and harvest trees.  The proceeds were then used to offset the cost of putting in a driveway.  Great deal all around - we wouldn't have had a clue on which trees were worth something and which weren't.

Hi Bob,  Great post.  We occasionally have timberland for sale here, and we should keep this in mind when selling it, so our buyers and sellers can get the most for their timber.

Excellent post Bob my brother lives in upstae NY and folks have stopped by offering him big money to have access to his trees. So far he has declined but I like Kat's thinking great way to offset a major expense if done properly.
