If You Upgrade to the iBox Lockbox Exchange in Sacramento

By
Real Estate Agent with Elizabeth Anne Weintraub, Broker DRE #00697006

When I first heard that Sacramento is finally getting our iBox upgrades to the new bluetooth devices, I was really stoked, until I got the details. I had been waiting since last year for MetroList to make the announcement that the Supra iBox lockbox exchange was coming. So, naturally, I had to do a little investigative work about how this works and how other MLS systems across the country handled their iBox exchanges. It is painful to say that we in Sacramento are receiving the crappy end of the deal.

I don't know if MetroList cares much about how it is perceived by other people. I recall when Mike Lyon was on the Board of MetroList. I wonder why he's not now . . . oh, yeah, there's that thing.

I read a notice written by another MLS in the Midwest to its members, and it was so polite and kind and warm. We just wanted to give to you a little heads up about what we're doing, why we're doing it, and how it will affect you, and when we know more information, we will gladly pass it along. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for being our subscriber.

Not Sacramento MetroList. MetroList writes No, you won't, we don't allow, this is the rule, here is our order, you must, you will, no, no, no, and did we say no enough times? There's little to no compassion, consideration for the audience in much of the correspondence I read by MetroList or maybe that's how they really feel.

Of course, I have a lot more to say about the Supra iBox BT LE exchange through MetroList. Some surprising stuff that I uncovered, which you might find as astonishing as I.  If you're planning to exchange your old lockbox for a new iBox, you should first read what the real deal is about it. You can read about it in my personal blog today: Fun Facts About Sacramento SUPRA iBox Exchange for Lockboxes.

Elizabeth Weintraub Sacramento Real Estate Agent, Top 1% of Lyon Agents  - When we talked yesterday, and you mentioned having 70 lockboxes that would need exchange, I almost choked!  In the past the exchange of lockboxes here in Sacramento was 1 for 1.  This time it will be costly for those agents, with many lockboxes, as they will take 2 and give you just 1 in return.

There is another element too.  If you have an odd number of lockboxes, they will credit you $20.00 for that odd lockbox toward the purchase of a new box. You will need to divy up $95.00 plus that credit to arrive at the $115.00 cost of a new box.

If there is anyone out there reading this in the Sacramento association, who has an odd number of lockboxes, we should talk.  I have an odd number of lockboxes as it turns out.  I can sell you my odd one for $25.00, so that together with the odd one of your's, you will have an even number to exchange!

Elizabeth, I don't envy the effort it will take for you to collect all your lockboxes, and getting them transported to CalExpo, where the exchange will occur.  You will obviously take quite a financial hit too, in order to make you whole!

Yikes - two for one, and you have 70? That is so frustrating. When we exchanged ours (supra) they didn't charge us anything, and it was one for one!

Yeah, Myrl, I'm trading in $9K of inventory to get about $4K. And then they want me to pay them more money on top of that as a lease for god knows how long? Depending on the lease, it might make more sense to sell the existing and buy new, but no matter how you cut it, it's expensive. It's thousands of dollars they didn't tell anybody about.

Sharon Paxson And when did you get your new SUPRA iBoxes in Orange County?

Holy cow Sharon Paxson , last year? We're a whole year behind Orange County in Sacramento? Man. That is terrible. We really are the butt-end of technology here.

That is terrible, and I am still finding agents using the older ones and then if you don't have adaptor on your iPhone, you cannot open them. The whole purpose is that they are blue tooth, but I recognize the difference when I pull up in front of house, new ones are longer!

That is a huge amount of money you are having to spend to update to the new ones.

A year later and they're still using the old SUPRA lockboxes? That's pretty pathetic. If you guys can't your act together with these new iBoxes, I imagine we're in a for rude awakening here. MetroList suggests that before an agent shows a property, the agent should verify with the listing agent the type of lockbox. So now I have to put into my all listings: Hey guys! New Lockbox!!

Sounds like the new boxes are designed very similarly to our Sentrilock boxes.  The fully releasing shackle is something you will love.  Hate to hear you aren't getting a 1 for 1 exchange.

Hi Elizabeth Weintraub Sacramento Real Estate Agent, Top 1% of Lyon Agents, it does not happen very often, but it still happens. I was with a buyer a week ago and could not get in because it was an old style lock box and didn't have adaptor with me so couldn't open it!  So then the agent just told me to open the back door because it was unlocked . . there's some security for you!

Hi Elizabeth.  Don't you have a MLS BOD that you can talk to?  You are really getting screwed with no kisses.

I wonder if MetroList is making money off of this transaction with the Supra folks?

Chris Ann Cleland I have my doubts about the fully releasing shackle because won't your box automatically fall to the ground, like, on your foot, or splatter some other unwelcome piece of nature onto your clothes?

Sharon Paxson I'm surprised they didn't just tell you to crawl through a window.

James Dray Well, you're the only other guy I've talked to who does not have the new iBoxes, so at least we're in the same boat.

Conrad: I do not have a MLS BOD I can talk to, it's not like they assign us personal shoppers at Nordstrom, LOL. I just have the internet to bitch on.

Hi Gabe: Most likely. It an exclusive contract and we are required to use Supra.

Elizabeth, boy I sure hope they don't do this here in the East Valley. We still have the old supra lockboxes, but I would not look forward to trading in 2 for 1.

Haven't had an issue with any of mine since we started using them in 2009.

That is rotten as we got 1 for 1 here.  It was a pain to carry all the boxes in and LOL, there were people who went out of turn for their name.....didnt I see you were to be out of town on that date?...maybe you should just go butt in, with your little red wagon.

You might get the 1 for 1 Troy.

Chris Ann Cleland I think this is a new version -- is your box longer and can it hold 5 sets of keys and two security cards?

Melanie Ross

:I was able to trade my date with another agent so I can go in earlier and cause havoc then. They say it's a 90-minute wait for 10 boxes. I think I'll be there all day. I will post an update to the MetroList Lockbox situation tomorrow as I have some new information, data that might shock you becuase it affects you too, you just don't know it.

It is not Supra, but Sentrilock.  It has a place to hold a security card, but it's tight with a card and a couple keys.

I think we must be the only association that is experiencing a 2 for 1 exchange. Most every place else it was 1 for 1.  As I read through the comments above, it seems fairly clear, that newer isn't always better in every instance.  It seems there are trade-offs here!
