9 Moving Day Tips to Keep You Sane!

If you’ve followed my previous Moving Tips posts then you’ve already edited what you have, 9 moving day tipsdecided what’s going and hired a professional mover.

However, you’re job is not done yet.  When moving day arrives, you want to make sure that you’re ready!

Here are 9  Moving Day Tips that can help keep you sane!

1.Try not to do this all on your own.

In my many moves, my husband had to go ahead of me to our new destination because of work.  Don’t try to do this alone! Whatever your situation, enlist a relative or good friend to be there with you.

When the movers arrive, things will go very quickly.  You’ll want someone there as an extra pair of eyes and hands.

You may even enlist them to make a lunch run for everyone!

It’s the same when the movers arrive at your new home and begin unloading... it’s like a circus. As items arrive, you’ll need to check them off of the inventory and inspect them as they come into the house.

2. Unless you planned on staying somewhere else the night before you move, you’ll have last minute items to be packed. Movers should leave you a box that is set up and empty.  All you need to do is place your bed linens, etc in there and they’ll tape it up.  Make sure it’s clearly marked.

3.Have a “Last on/First Off” box.

This is the last box that is placed on the moving truck but will be the first one you’ll want off.

~Note-even if you’re just moving across town, you’ll still want to be able to get your hands on these items quickly~

The items you’ll want to place in this box are what you’ll want and need as soon as you arrive in your new home.

It could be:

-your coffeemaker, coffee and cups

-scissors and a pocket knife to open boxes

-paper towels and cleaner

-toilet paper and soap

-trash bags

-bottled water

-your house phone

9 tips for moving day4.Don’t forget to pack (and know where they are) all of the chargers and cords for your smart phones, tablets, etc.

5.Carry with you your jewelry and important documents.

DO NOT put them on the carrier.

6.It pays to feed the help!

I usually order several pizzas and sodas for the movers.

7.Before you get rushed make sure that you have not packed:

-garage door openers

-extra house keys

-remotes for fans or lights

-instructions for appliances etc

8.Know what goes where!

It’s been my experience that one person will be coming in and asking you where the sofa house floorplangoes, while someone else is walking by asking you where to place the Master bedroom wardrobe box.  And, don’t forget the third mover who will be standing there wanting to know where to put the Dresser!

Draw a floor plan and have it where you and your helper can reference it.

9.Take photos!

Take them of your old home when you leave.  If the movers have damaged the property, you’ll want to take photos.

You’ll want to do the same in your new home.  Take photos of any damage that is made to the property or your personal items.

Remember these tips for a successful move:

*Be there

*Be organized

*Be ready
*Be aware

Good evening Kathy Streib.  What an excellent post on what to do to make moving easier, simpler and less stressful.  I remember when we moved Debbie 1400 miles without assistance.  Whew...... Talk about a job and she did ALL the packing of a 3100 sq ft home by herself!

You'll definitely be needing things you didn't anticipate in the midst of a move and when you first get to your destination. I'd like to add something to the toiletries section but can't think of the right words this minute ;).
