It is an honour and my privilege to belong to the Kingston chapter of 100+Women Who Care. Last quarter our group was able to provide Kingston's RKY Camp with almost $20,000. RKY Camp provides value-based summer camping and outdoor education programming to participants from all backgrounds encouraging them to challenge themselves, practice cooperation, teamwork, and to grow in mind, body and spirit. Along with a new dock, our group donation of nearly $20,000 in November will send over 25 campers to camp this summer!
Last night we were able to provide $20,000+ to St Vincent de Paul Society in Kingston in 1 short hour!
This much needed organization provides a hot lunch 5 days a week - we were told they have recently had to downsize the portions due to such a high cost of food and lack of funds. They were saddened to have to limit the spaghetti and meatballs from 3 meatballs to just one and instead of 2 hot dogs they had to reduce to just one per person as an example of only 2 cost cutting necessities !
They also have a food pantry that people were allowed to visit once per month and that recently had to be reduced to just once every two months!! They can only receive food for 2 days for their household. A story was told of a man coming in needing a box of cereal and another story of a woman asking for 2 rolls of toilet paper! Can you imagine?
I don't think there were too many dry eyes in the room after that (I know mine were leaking!)
They also have their version of a thrift shop but everything is free because the need is so great, people have no funds left over for clothing or boots.
If you live or work in the Greater Kingston area, please do what you can to help these people and this wonderful organization. They could use donations of food, money, clothing or time. If you have anything to give, now would be the time to provide it.
If you need help, they're available for you. If you're able to help, they're available to receive it!
PS See if there is a 100 Women Who Care chapter in your area.
