Texas Independence Day ~ When Texas became Texas ~ March 2, 1836
Do you know when Texas became Texas? It happened on March 2, 1836 with the adoption of the Texas Declaration of Independence. Texas honors this event by observing Texas Independence Day as an official holiday on March 2nd and on March 2nd, 2015 we will be celebrating our 179th year!
Sixty delegates from all over Texas signed the declaration commemorating Texas independence from Mexico! The language used to draw up the declaration followed the 1776 Declaration of Independence of the United States which is observed on July 4th and referred to as Independence Day.
The US Congress admitted Texas nine years later and admitted Texas as a constituent state of the Union as of December 29, 1845. Sam Houston Day is also observed on March 2nd marking the birthday of the man who led Texas to victory over the Mexican troops at the Battle of San Jacinto.
