Another rant... I'm a person, not a "thing"

By

Please excuse me for returning to an old real estate grammar rant...

More and more lately I've noticed bloggers referring to themselves or other people as "that" rather than who.

"When you want an agent that has your best interests at heart..." Murphy dog is a who, not a that

"The young man that made the offer on..."

You get the idea.

Maybe I shouldn't let it bug me, but it does, because "that" refers to a thing, not a person. When you're talking about yourself or some other person, use "who."

There's some debate among grammarians over whether "who" should be used in reference to pets, and there I also stand firm: If someone has a name, he or she is a "who." It may be a dog, a cat, a horse, or a cow, but if he/she has enough of a personality and differentiation from the herd to possess a name, I say "who."

Yes, I go w/ who... and I will often say he/she and/or their name.  Pets are the best.

Bob Crane You probably have.

James Dray One of the first things they teach in obedience training (which is really for the humans, not the dogs) is to call your dog by his or her name when you call them, when you praise them, and when you say "No." If you just say "Good dog" you could be talking to anyone.

Debbie Gartner They are indeed.

Wayne Martin If you have been, you probably won't be again, because you'll notice it.

Sheila Anderson Whenever I see something like "The seller that..." I have an urge to write to the writer and say "People aren't thats. People are whos." But I never do. Instead I write a rant on Active Rain.

I love it.  If they have a face or a name they should be a WHO.  Great post as always.

Belinda Spillman Yep. Even if they're just humans!

But... now I have to wonder if that would include robots... people give them faces and name them, I've heard.

I'm guilty of this one big time.  Your post is a great reminder not to be the person who does this.

I am convinced Murphy is a "who".

Who else but Murphy would nuzzle and play with me when he wants to be played with? Or when he sees that I've got a treat hidden in my hand?

"When you want an agent that has your best interests at heart", I think that's a WHO as well, but I'll let you tell him/her.

Claude Labbe And who else but Murphy would be fascinated by the vacuum cleaner - or my hair when it's wet and smelling like conditioner?  The way he behaves, you'd be sure there were treats hidden there!

Barbara Todaro I was thinking about this last night. Nobody ever refers to a person as "something" unless they're saying something like "Boy, he's really something else."

When we talk about people we say someone, not something.

So why do so many refer to humans as "that" instead of "who?"

Uh oh Marte. I think I might be guilty on this one. I'm not really sure what I say, but I'm almost certain I don't say who. Shame on me!

Nina Hollander Considering what they don't teach in school any more combined with some nasty habits such as inserting "like" into every sentence, just walking through a store overhearing conversations is enough to make many of us cringe.

Donna Foerster OK - look closely. You'll see me wagging a finger at you!
