You Have Got Mail Or Do You?

So many agents believe that all they need today is email to reach their prospects - and their clients. In my opinion, that's a convenient excuse for not spending the money for postal mail.

The statistics Winston quotes here show clearly that ignoring postal mail means ignoring more than 39% of your prospective clients. One comment on his post said "Yes, but you're reaching the other 61%." Maybe, maybe not. Perhaps a good number of people in that 61% prefer email because it's so easy to delete.

I know that when I visit my gmail account, I only go there to delete the mail. I only use that address when I have to leave an address in a place where I know the ads will soon follow.

Perhaps the numbers would be different if a poll was taken that included ONLY millennials.

I'm sure it would be different if a poll included only senior citizens, because I know many seniors who either don't own a computer or smart phone - or who check their email only every week or two.

We have members here who have proven that direct mail works and works well. Barbara Todaro comes to mind.

If you really don't want to use postal mail, don't use it. But don't try to convince others that it doesn't work, and don't think that you're reaching every potential client when you stick exclusively to email.

You Have Got Mail Or Do You?

These days, most people have phone and email access in the palm of their hands, via their mobile devices. So it’s easy to assume that direct mail is no longer a viable way to reach your prospects and clients.

Not so.

According to data by the Post Office, a whopping 39% of households prefer to receive advertising and special offers by mail rather than phone or email. Also, 43% favor direct mail over email when receiving correspondence from businesses and professionals they know.

So don’t make the mistake of dropping direct mail from your communications strategy. If you do, you’ll cut out more than a third of your market!

I tend to reach them by phone and then ask which is the best way to communicate in the future.  Sometimes people fool me and a young person will say call and and a retiree will say text.  Keeps me on my toes.

Michele Connors Thanks for the good wishes!

Barbara Todaro Anyone who doesn't believe in postal mail needs to start following your blog - and your advice.

Tammy Lankford That just goes to show - we can generalize about groups, but we'd better not try to pigeonhole individuals.

I am one of those that doesn't want the mail but have friends that do. I know we have to assess who is in our market and how they are likely to respond and do many types of marketing.

I do alot of snail mailing, as I call it, in addition to emailing. I've believed for a long time that it's got to be a good mix of the two to be successful.

Anthony Saunchez I think so - market from several directions, and make all of your marketing efforts work together.

Thank you Barbara Todaro I see you're well on your way to THREE million!

Debbie Reynolds I kind of enjoy the catalogs that come, with the exception of those for products I would never buy (bow hunters equipment, anyone?) and those that come in duplicate and triplicate. They're good for browsing over lunch, and every once in a while one of them gives me a perfect gift idea.

Nina Hollander I do think that to be successful you need more than a one-dimensional approach to marketing.

Thanks for the congratulations - you'll be joining the club before you know it. I know I got there a lot sooner than I expected, especially since I haven't had much time for blogging lately.

Thanks Donna Foerster - and I see you have crossed that threshold as well! In fact, you're well on your way to the next million.

I don't know about you, but a couple of years ago I never dreamed that I would be joining the millionaire set.

Congratulations to both of us!

Marte... my problem was that I spent probably a year plus lurking around AR and not doing much. Of course, I didn't even know what the points meant until after I'd gotten to the 150,000 range or so.

Nina Hollander I did the same. I joined in 2007 and did practically nothing with it for a year or two.
