Most of the islands in the Galapagos Archipelago have colonies of marine iguanas. It's quite an experience to stand on a lava rock shoreline, surrounded in all directions by creatures from the depths of hell, basking in the sun to recharge their batteries before entering the sea to munch on some yummy underwater algae.

Actually, these guys are quite docile on land, and the biggest danger is stepping on one inadvertently and hurting it. They're everywhere.

On islands where there is ample vegetation, land iguanas are common. Unlike their marine kin, they live solitary lives, and are generally larger, growing up to 5 feet in size and up to 25 pounds.
