Tips to Help Your Small Room Appear Not-So-Small

Whether you’re planning on staying in your home or preparing it for sale, small kitchenthere are things you can do to make a room feel larger.  What you’re trying to do is trick the eyes.

It’s not deceitful.  Women have known for years that our basic black dress will not only take you anywhere but also helps to slim you in the eyes of others.

There are many things you can do to give your room a larger feel...some you’d want to do if you were planning on staying in the home.  Others, though, can help when trying to show your buyers the possibilities of your home.

Tips to Help Your Small Room Appear Not-so-Small

1.Edit as much as you can.

You’ll want to do this anyway if your home is for sale but especially true if your room is small.  If you have bookcases, leave as much blank space as you can. Get things off of the floor.

2.Let the light in.

Remove heavy drapes and use simple panels in the same color as your wall for your window treatments. When your home is being shown, let that light in.  Remove the window screens as well.

3.And add more light.

Most of the homes I see have too little light.  Add lights to your secondary bedrooms and don’t rely solely on the overhead light.  Add table lights and Torchiere lights to your rooms.

4.Add Mirrors.

Strategically placed, mirrors can do double duty.  They add light when reflecting from your windows and they make a space appear larger.

over-stuffed furniture5.Let your furniture work for you.

Do NOT move all of your furniture against the wall.  If you can, choose pieces that are raised and have exposed legs.  Pick tables with glass tops.

Often choosing one large piece can be better than having 2 or 3 smaller pieces.

6.Choose colors wisely

White? NO  However you can use color as long as you remember to keep it buyer friendly if you are selling. Bright works better than dull.

7.Choose one larger, rather than many small

People tend to think that if the room is small they need to keep everything else small.  It’s better to pick one larger accent piece for the room than make your buyer do the eye-bounce with small objects all over. This larger piece can add more drama to the room than dozens of smaller items.

8.Play with your furniture.

Sometimes you have to try different arrangements or different angles to see what opens up the room.

9. Save your stuffing for Thanksgiving.

Who doesn’t like sitting in one of those over-stuffed chairs!  But they will eat up your space.

10.Let as much of your floor as you can show.

We often use a rug to help anchor a seating area but you’ll want to avoid lots of small rugs.

Your small room can live larger...just follow these 10 tips.

Good morning, Kathy -- I admit I've been known to play with my furniture.   Sometimes with others too.

Size - scale - color - light all come into play as you have stated so well in this post.

Hi Kathy Streib  And here I thought you were going to say "Paint it black."

We have a room that is just too small. If I had seen it with any furniture in it I would have realized that it was just too small for anything.

Hi Joyce Kelley white adds nothing and can make a room seem cold.  Although, it's better than some other colors.  It's better to go with a light grey or taupe with white trim.

Thank you Michael Jacobs Larry used to laugh and say he never knew what family room he was coming home to.

I agree Ron and Alexandra Seigel  My favorite room in one of our homes was a paneled study that Larry built.  It had deep burgundy wine walls and white carpeting.  I'm sure I broke all of the rules but we loved it.

Kathy, what always gets me is when people buy big furniture for the next house while living in a smaller house. Talk about making the rooms look small!
