Flood DebrisIf you thought I was talking about sobriety guess again.

Tonight the family went out to diner to celebrate 5 years of being back in our home after it was devastated by the flood of 2011.

Flood waters ran through our home and a couple thousand others for a full month before the water subsided and revealed the damage the flood had done.

While it only took 9 months for our home to be reconstructed it took a couple of years to repair the lawn and our out buildings.

Although I was living every man's dream for 9 months, that is living in my mother-in-laws basement, it was good to get back into our own home again.

Many Minot residents are reliving the nightmare these days as they have fixed up their homes like we did only to be told this year that the City is buying them out and they have to move. If you are one of those people please note that we will be holding an informational meeting soon at National Marketing Realtors along with Tivoli Custom Builders and USB Bank. For more information please feel free to contact me through the information below.

FEMA is buying out some of my neighbors here in Shell Point (Florida).  FEMA wants all the older one-story houses demolished, and replaced with houses on pilings (stilts).

We can not effectively do stilts here Fred Griffin because when the North wind blows in the winter a home on stilts just can not be insulated enough.

Bob,

I'm so glad that you and your family were able to celebrate tonight despite the devastation your experienced in 2011.  From the words of Oscar Wilde, "what seems to us as bitter trials are often blessings in disguise."  Take care.

Selling Homes Changing Lives

Bob "RealMan" Timm - I can empathize. I was also humbled by an electrical fire and put out for 6 months. It wasn't fun to live in a very small hotel room with a teenage son and a cocker spaniel. Nor was it easy on the maids in the hotel, but as you say, we were humbled.

Living in that basement changed you, didn't it? What a nightmare for the homeowners who are being told to move by the City. Thank God for a few good men, especially you who will be meeting with the National Marketing Realtors and the Builders soon to discuss the planning. May there be hope and peace for those not so lucky.

Good morning Bob.  Did the city buy the homes at market value or will they be paying a premium?

Let's hope those 5 years turn into 6 and beyond. No one needs to experience this sort of devastation in their lives.

Oh man.  I bet that was quite the mess.  9 months is a long time to be at your mother-in-law's place waiting for your home to be habitable again.

Thank you Patricia Feager , a fire would be a horrible experience as well and yes it does humble you.

Kind of in between there James Dray . I think the first ones to voluntarily sell out got market value and 10%. I don't know for sure what this involuntary round received.

That's for sure Sandy Padula and Norm Padula, JD, GRI NMLS#1483386 . This year started out a little scary with two big blizzards right off the bat but things have settled down and we have had some very good melts lately.

Sheila Anderson I'm one of the lucky ones that gets to stay put. They are buying out lower areas that it would just be easier to let flood then to dike around.

Maria Sapio it's very surrealistic. You see/watch all the devastation around you and there is absolutely nothing you can do about it.

I hope our meeting will be of help to some Grant Schneider . We just want to help those being forced to relocate do it with the least amount of stress possible.

It could have been worse Belinda Spillman , at least my mother-in-law likes me . I was able to make repairs at her home while we were staying there and do the shoveling and such.

It's good to hear you've had five years of DRY, Bob "RealMan" Timm! Living on an island I know many owners who either risk everything or pay the price for good flood insurance. Hawaii is currently considering manditory flood insurance in vulnerable zones.  Lessons learned...

Kathleen Luiten being I had written this a month ago I had to look twice at your comment about being dry for 5 years.... of course you were talking about the flood and I was thinking sobriety... which would be more like 20 years.

Ha ha, that's funny since your first line in the blog sets us straight on the kind of "dry" you're celebrating. Congrats on 20 years of the other dry too Bob "RealMan" Timm
