Organize Your Home Office Day is March 14, 2017
Even if you don’t work from home, most everyone has some kind of home office these days. Some of us are neat and well-organized and then there’s the rest of us!
And so today is as good a day as any to take the first step in organizing that space.
You may have a designated office as most homes today do, or you may have carved out a niche in one of your rooms. Wherever it is, why not take the work out of work by getting it organized so your time at your desk is spent focusing on just that?!
Here are some 10 tips...
1. Create a space that can house everything.
If you can’t deal or address a project at your desk, you’re more likely to put it in the “LATER” pile. For example, if you have to walk to another room or even across the room to file something or retrieve something, you’ll put it off until you have time.
2.Digitize as much as you can
Yes, there are some things that you need paper copies of but where you can take advantage of cloud storage.
3.Make your space Functional, Permanent, and Design Friendly.
~Finding a permanent location for your home office allows you to have a designated space for your work...one where you can close the door and get away from it.
Try to avoid using your dining room table for your desk. The problem with using your dining room table is that you end up with your papers spread out everywhere, you never truly get away from work, and you’ll end up having to eat at the kitchen counter.
~It needs to be functional because if not, you will find all sorts of reasons to avoid using it. It needs to have access to outlets, adequate lighting and is comfortable to work at.
~Make it design friendly so that you will actually enjoy being there. Resist the temptation to use the card table that you’ve had stored in your garage.
4.Invest in a shredder and have it near your desk.
We know that for security purposes we need to shred certain papers. Have it near where you work to make it easier for you.
5.Have on your desk in a stand or tray folders that you check daily.
You can tailor them to fit your needs, but make sure they’re easy to reach and see.
6.Use baskets, trays, and colorful boxes for storage.
You can find these at Target, Michael’s, Home Goods, and other home accessory stores.
Have fun with what you use!
7.Use drawer organizers.
If your desk has drawers, invest in a drawer organizer that can be used for paper clips, pens, and any other small items.
8.Get a comfortable chair.
I can attest to this. One of my desks had a lovely matching chair that was so uncomfortable I never wanted to work at my desk!
9.Group your supplies for easy use
Have stationary and stamps together, for example.
Keep copy paper and ink together.
10.Dedicate each day to staying organized.
Make an appointment with yourself to spend 30 minutes a day (or whatever works for you) to organize your desk. Make it a habit.
You’d be surprised how much more you can get done when you edit your office area!!!
