Free delivery of the Los Angeles Times Sunday Edition...

Two weeks ago we received a notice in the form of a post card, that we will be receiving at no cost the Sunday Edition of the Los Angeles Times. My first reaction was: WHY? Diane wanted to call them up and let them know we are not interested.

Last Sunday went by and no Delivery, it made me ponder: They promised but did not deliver WHY? Clearly my thoughts were that they are having financial issues, advertising issues, hence they are trying to pad the numbers that they have more "readership" than what they have been showing.

So today to my surprise we received our complementary issue of the Sunday LA Times. Diane was ready to throw it in the recycle bin....I insisted on wanting to see it. It has been years since I had the Sunday Paper in my hand.

I noticed that the paper was much slimmer, i.e.: fewer advertisements, fewer coupons and of course the "Parade Magazine" was a much smaller version of the one I was used to browsing through.

It was nice to see the Arts & Books section, it was also refreshing to see that they brought back the section that addressed the standings of books  i.e.: The Best Seller's List. On a side note one of the things that annoyed me with the paper was when they eliminated the Best Seller's List. It was nice seeing it back. Had I not been so busy I would have actually spent more time with the paper. As it stands I realized that I did not miss it and by getting it for free it is nice but no big gift.

Clearly by moving the Real Estate Section to Saturday, I am even less inclined by their free offer.

Now I am more curious what the real motivation is by the powers to be at the paper? I suspect there is an ulterior motive. What do you think??

Hi Endre --- I still have the Los Angeles Times delivered(only Thursday through Sunday) but am rethinking that decision.  The cost is not quite FREE but it's really low but the newspaper is not the one of my youth...or even of my 40s or....well...let's just say the good ol' days of large newspapers are not returning.

Community newspapers, on the other hand, seem to be enjoying some new life.  Maybe that Sunday edition could be good for Schmo to retrieve from the driveway.

Hi Endre - I've been subscribing to the NY Times Sunday edition for years - I like the physical experience of reading it early Sunday morning with coffee and pastries. But the real reason I do it is that it's the cheapest way to get access to the NY Times digital edition, which I read every day.

Good morning Endre.  I am very sad about the decline of the printed news around the country.  I think they serve a very useful purpose and I, for one still get a paper every day.

Hi Endre, We still have our local paper delivered every day and I refuse to cancel it even though the cost is a little larger and the paper is a little smaller each year. Maybe I'm old (or old school) but to me, reading the news online is just not the same as holding the paper in your hands. My husband claims he would not miss the paper if we cancel but on the days it is delivered late, he is the first one to call the paper and complain!

Gabe Sanders  in many ways they are to be blamed... I remember 40 years ago we received news... then 35 years ago we started getting commentary...now we get propaganda and ego....not news...Endre
