At this time of year there are so many opportunities to make a difference for others. I try to make sure I am involved throughout the year and now have scheduled activities every month to ensure I make it happen.
One new opportunity I’ve found this year is volunteering at the Central Texas Food Bank. I had no idea how great the need for fighting hunger is in Central Texas. I was astonished to learn nearly 46,000 Central Texans (one third are children) count on the Food Bank to get nutritious food. A dear friend Roxanne Ford with Austin Title Company made this a priority with her company and sets up a time every month for us to help in whatever activity they need us to help ensure thousands of families are served. I can’t wait for December we are going to be handing out food from a pantry location. Every month I’ve been working in the warehouse so this will be fun to see our efforts actually given to those in need.
In 1982 the Central Texas Food Bank was established to help the hungry in communities. There are many who had to turn to the food pantries for food assistance. Fighting hunger is done the Central Texas Way. Programs and services have been uniquely designed to serve neighbors in ways they need most. When they first started in 1982 330,000 pounds of food was provided. During 2015-2106 38 million pounds of food were distributed to families in need! That’s incredible!!
Partner Agencies (government, social service charities, local businesses and many more) in 21 counties across Texas united to be at the front line of hunger relief, working together to put healthy foods within the reach of Central Texas in need. It goes to show there’s strength in numbers and in working together. There are now roughly 250 Partner agencies that work to serve families in 21 Central Texas Counties at soup kitchens, food pantries, after-school programs, snack programs and other service centers.
It’s amazing all the counties in their service area: Bastrop, Bell, Blanco, Burnet, Caldwell, Coryell, Falls, Fayette, Freestone, Gillespie, Hays, Lampasas, lee, Limestone, Llano, McLennan, Milam, Mills, San Saba, Travis and Williamson counties!
It’s my pleasure to be involved volunteering at the Central Texas food Bank. I come home exhausted but what a great tired feeling knowing I’ve made a difference in contributing my time and energy. This is my entry into Belinda Spillman Pay it Forward Challenge!
