My Body Is Trained To Stay Healthy | My Mind To Maintain My Job

The true challenge for every real estate agent/manager/broker is knowing when to stop.  The day eventually comes when our contribution to others begins to decline.

We test ourselves every day; we strive to gain knowledge that we were void of; and we attempt to educate others. We also have an appetite for the knowledge younger agents will share.

It’s important to be mindful of what we continue to possess that others can utilize and recognize what we lack. We all have our weak points. Times continue to change and as that occurs our roles may change.

When we are fortunate enough to be the recipients of a constant flow of inventory, we must mentor others more frequently.  Never assume all of those around you are knowledgeable about all facets of listing property.  Constant communication will expose what one needs for mentoring.  It happens quite naturally!!

In the back of my mind, I’m always mindful of my worth, or lack thereof, and question mine and others’ contribution to our degree of success. No one is exempt from this continual assessment.

Just another off the wall thought for the moment……

I would certainly need some retraining if I returned to real estate sales.

I'm totally with you on each point, Barbara. I think that is one great thing about having a support team - we are often evaluating 'performance' and what needs to be tweaked as well. The healthier our bodies, the healthier our minds (unless there is unknown, underlying disease).

Lovely food for thought, as always Barbara!

Good mroning Barbara - I see this all of the time.  I can teach much but then I learn so much from the younger professionals.  I found this to be true throughout my career.

When we help others we help ourselves, don't we Barbara?

Aug 20, 2018 10:12 AM
Barbara Todaro

yes, we certainly do.... and we don't need to be in our later years (frippin' old) to do that.... I've been doing it for decades.... the older I was the more I had to share.... that's the difference.... what little I had in my very early years, I passed along to very new agents and it was appreciated....

Hi Barbara, being a mentor or teacher is one of the most satisfying activities I have encountered.  I have kept in touch with a few high school students who have graduated from college and appreciate some of my thoughts and guidance.  The younger generation needs to learn from those who've seen it all.

Good morning Barbara Todaro,

I'm not sure how I missed this post so I was glad to see Kathy Streib feature in her "Ah-Ha" moments for the week. It is a waste to NOT share knowledge...there's nothing more rewarding than to mentor and watch that person take off, make it their own and do well!

Hi Barbara

Well you may think it's off the wall but I'd say it's pretty wise advice. Being open to learning, helping when one can, getting assistance when needed, and recognizing when you don't know something are all pretty darn important...in our business and in life.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend!

"Assessing" ourselves is so important, how we spend our time, how we keep our body healthy and our mind active. Midway through the year, like now, when people are already asking what my Holiday plans are, I start to analyze what has been good for me and what has been a waste of time and effort. One thing is for sure, my daily early morning swim stays a routine!

Hi Barbara: I love this post and I have read the comments and they too are terrific....It is a  little known fact that as an established agent we get less and less of the "new" type of buyer and seller--These customers and clients are now trained to look for the latest, "hot" new agent. They seem to have lost their fear for the untrained agent (at least that is what is happening here!) and they seek them out. The same thing with management---they are constantaly promoting and touting their newer agents, almost as if it doesn't matter if they have 1 or 20 years under their belt!...But I look at it as having an advantage because i have an established base; not that they are always buying or selling but they do have family members and friends who they refer to me all the time and it is where my business comes from today, almost exclusively. I have a constant flow of customers and clients that always seem to be there no matter how slow the market is! I, too find that if I can invest 15 to 20 minutes a day on my "True Elyptical Trainer", I can beat 'em all in terms of energy..."True" is a dream of a trainer that has these very short, intense programs for full body workouts and I use that machine every day just to keep the doldrums at bay! Where i sit in my office, I have agents sitting in this same area and I hear constant complaining about how "tired I am"--apparently at about 3:00 everyday these youngsters start to fade and they can't figure it out! It is all about diet, workout and the right supplements too (B12 esp)! Great Post!... and thank you for sharing it, Barbara!

Paula Hathaway, REALTOR, LBA having an established base always trumps the new agent being fed a new buyer client.... Broker/Owner/Managers MUST keep those new agents happy and "fed" if they are not training and mentoring!! once the seasoned agents decide to retire, they need to replace your  position within the agency with another one who is seasoned... that's the currently new agents.... the main job of that broker is to find more new agents, or his future will be looking dim...

young real estate agents are under so much stress, they tend to over-eat and are fatigued by mid afternoon.... that's an imbalance of nutrients in the body.... HIIT is ideal for real estate agents.... I do 30 inutes every morning at the YMCA.... high intensity interval training is perfect for me.... I never stay an hour....and I'm there when the doors open at 5:00am... no one gets in my way...

Barbara I couldn't agree with you more.  That's why I made a commitment with my office in 2018 to teach Real Estate Stories one day a month for the year.  I have broken up the listing process into 12 segments.  I take them from "where to find listings" to "getting your client to the closing table".

The classes so far have been a tremendous success; great attendance and conversations.  The attendees get a lot out of the class...but I feel I get so much more.

Barbara, you have presented many good considerations for all agents as we continue to work in this industry. There are so many changes including contract updates as well as technology and the various ways we market and represent our clients. It's in all of our best interest to stay educated and aware of all these facets to effectively represent our clients's best interest.
