Take a Pause...

The other day I had the good fortune to meet a surgical technician at one of our local hospitals. I asked her if she knew my husband’s neurosurgeon, Dr. time outSachs, and she broke out in a big smile.

It turned out that she and the hospital staff felt the same way as we and others do about him...he’s a gem!

She told me that one of the many things she admired about him was that he was a stickler for “Timeout” before a surgery.

I know that Debe Maxwell, CRS  and Margaret Rome, Baltimore Maryland know about this but for those of us not in the medical field, a surgical time-out is part of the Universal Protocoldesigned to ensure correct patient identity, correct scheduled procedure, and correct surgical site”

It includes the verification of correct patient positioning, availability of relevant documents, diagnostic images, instruments and implants, and the need for preoperative antibiotics and other essential medications…”

The surgical technician told me that Dr. Sachs would always say “Ok, let’s take a pause.” or “Time out!

So what does this have to do with anything?

We may not be performing surgery but some of our actions whether in our work or private lives are certainly deserving of a pause or time-out before we do or say something that cannot be taken back.

With the holiday season upon us, we will all be pulled in different directions. There are deadlines to be met, contracts that need to be thoroughly read, and negotiations that will demand our attention.

And many of us will feel the additional tug of the holiday season...gifts to buy, holiday meals to prepare, family to meet with (or avoid...LOL) and travel plans to be made.

Taking a timeout is something we could all use when we have decisions to be made or important conversations we need to have.

Who knows...give it a try!

This is a great example of that old saw, count to ten. My wife and I go into meditative mode before tackling something big.

Kathy,

Wise advice.  We have practiced this for many years now.  We do take a pause prior to making any decision big or small.  Great post. A

Kathy, with many things going on, we do need to take a breath, and pause before doing things too fast and making errors.

Oh, yes, the big blue X on the right leg, LOL. Even yesterday, when I changed my return flight to Sacramento from February 4th to March 6th (oh wth market will be slow), the agent at Hawaiian said, let's review this before booking.

Hi Kathy Streib, we should all live by this all year long. Think before speaking or hitting that "send" button. Thank you for the reminder!

Kathy this sounds like a very wise and good "timeout" unlike the "timeout" kids get.

So true!  especially when there is a crisis or problem...be it small, like overcooking a meal or larger--forgetting an important part of a negotiation.

Stay calm and focused, and figure out a solution!

Good morning, Kathy,

I like the concept and mindset of a pause, a quiet moment, before an important event, or journey. Beautiful post, and I am glad that your husband is in the care of Dr. Sach's and his team!

While I never announce my pauses before speaking, I often take them, particularly when talking with my husband.  He never forgets ANYTHING.  If I misspeak, I will hear about it forever.

I sometimes feel the urge to immediately reply to an e-mail and press "send". However, there are times when I don't want to reply and I take time to contemplate, which often leads to a thoughtful response that is way better than a knee jerk response. Great reminder

There's nearly always time to pause...and that pause may turn out to be the most valuable time we spend on the project.    Great post; thank you Kathy Streib
