Can You See Me Now???

Ok, let’s try this again.  Sheila Anderson expressed her frustration in a recent post about trying to read small fonts in posts. And, many of us are in agreement.

We really do want to read your posts and the words of wisdom you want to magnifying glass and reading a papershare with us but in all honesty, our eyes are getting older and can’t handle the <14 size font.

Add to that the wonderful wall of words, the lack of the occasional bold type to wake us up, and no photos or clip-art to speak of ....well, even John Grisham or James Patterson would have a hard time getting anything read here.

What I would suggest to you IF (and keep in mind, it is YOUR blog) you want others to read what you write…

Minimum Size 14 Font…

Not this or this.

If you seem to be having trouble formatting your blog, you might try writing it in Google Docs first, then copy and paste it to the ActiveRain editor.

White Space…

Our eyes need a break. White space gives our mind time to process what we just read (I made that up but it sounds good.) It also gives our eyes a break.

I use 1.15 between lines. You may also want to indent and add an additional space between paragraphs.

Keep Paragraphs Short…

I had to read paragraphs that were 8 or 10, 20 sentences or more when I was in graduate school and I did it because I had to. (I also inhaled lots of black coffee)

Don’t do that here. Break up your paragraphs to fewer sentences to keep the reader reading.

screamingTry to Refrain From Screaming at Your Reader

Just as fonts under size 14 are too small to read, you also don’t want to scream at your reader with a whole post of size 18 or more font!

Colors Can Be Distracting

While it can be fun to play around with colors (and yes, I do use one different color in my title and sometimes my quotes) try not to get too carried away. That said, I read an interesting article about reading and color gradients that is very interesting, especially as most of us are not reading on our screens)

Wake Us Up With Bold Type

Every so often, bold your word or a phrase to make it stand out and wake us up.

Add Clip Art or a Photo

We’re only human and we love to look at pictures. Add one or two to help our eyes walk down the page. Just make sure that the photo or clip-art is yours to use (purchased with permission to use or taken with your own camera)

And Finally...Avoid the Wall of Words

This ties in with the white space and the addition of photos. No matter wall of wordswhat you write and how interesting it is, it’s hard to get any of us, dedicated as we are, to read a wall of words.

Nothing about any of this is etched in stone at ActiveRain other than avoiding copyright infringement.  These are merely hints that will help others in reading your blog!

Hello Kathy,  I agree, make  it 14 font to start out with.  I have to use internet explorer now to post my blogs and sometimes it will change half my blog from 14 font to 10 bont, I so not know why.  Sorry All!

Good advice, most frustrating is when you set it all up nicely, but AR messes with your set up and things don't appear as when you pressed PUBLISH.

These are great tips!  If people can't even read the posts that we make, why even bother making them, haha.

That is an excellent suggestion that I should heed. I believe I have been using 12 for years up until now!

Kathy-being of the age where glasses are a necessity to see and stronger lenses to read I don't like trying to read real small print. Hard on the eyes and gives me a headache.

Hi Kathy Streib

I hope many see this post. A lot of great thoughts here.  I try to summarize my paragraphs in a subtitle above each paragraph to help those who like to "speed" read!

Barbara Todaro I hear 'ya. There are times when 18 font would be nice, especially if I'm reading at night.

Michael Jacobs it is rare if I read a post that is a wall of words.

Grant Schneider I agree. There are times when if it's too large I find it hard to read.

Nina Hollander I can answer that...both!

Myrl Jeffcoat it isn't always the case that it's hard and I have a feeling that it depends on the subject.

Kat Palmiotti why write it if you don't want anyone to read it, unless it's your personal journal, right?

Sheila Anderson it's really not up to the staff, I suppose. We all have a choice. But hopefully some will bump up their font.

Jeffrey DiMuria 321.223.6253 Waves Realty I zip right past when I see them.

Thank you Norma J. Elkins Maybe some will catch on. Have a wonderful day.

It is up to staff. If we ask and they ignore us, who is responsible?

So true Carol Williams And I've heard suggested from time to time that why not break it down into two or more posts.

George Souto absolutely. Many of us feel that way.

Ron and Alexandra Seigel emojis can disrupt the flow as you're trying to read.

Agree Debb Janes EcoBroker and Bernie Stea JD it's very much like staging your home for sale. Let the eye settle on to what's important and don't distract it.

Joan Cox  it's too bad they don't have the webinars that Bob Stewart gave about how to write a post. That's where I learned it all.

Hi Will Hamm have you considered writing your posts in Google Docs?  I use it and rarely have a problem.

Nick Vandekar, 610-203-4543 oh yes, I've had that happen as well. Very frustrating.

Excellent point Brian England and don't know if I told you this the other day but Thank You for your text.

Paul S. Henderson, REALTOR®, CRS I started out using smaller text too until another member very kindly texted me and suggested a larger font.

Krystin Mitchell, CPA CFE there no "manual" here that acts as a guide so it's hit and miss and trial and error.

Morning Kathy.

Interesting, all of my posts are in 18 font.  I'll post mine today in 16 and see if that works.  Have a great day

This is excellent advice to share. Some of the blogs I visit are difficult to read.

Oversized fonts in bright blue come to mind.

All excellent points Kathy!

Being in the middle of reviewing all my old posts I've found many that have tiny print. It wasn't tiny when the posts were written. At some point it changed due to AR formatting and we had to start using bigger font.
