Friday Fun…It’s Squirrel Appreciation Day

Yes, they’re rodents but they’re so darn cute!!!

When my uncle retired as an architect, he had fun doing two things…growing his roses and feeding his squirrels.

In Florida, we had squirrels that would come to see us as soon as we opened our garage door, or when Larry was in the driveway working on a car.

When we drive up after our morning walk, one is usually on the fence waiting for his morning treat.  If we forget about them, they are at the window begging for their peanut.

Some are shy. I can tell that they want to take a peanut from me but they don’t want to get too close. That’s ok. They need to be cautious.

There is one who came up to me when I was outside on the phone with Margaret Rome Baltimore 410-530-2400  during her radio program. Thankfully, I had a peanut in my back pocket.

If you’ve been outdoors and heard an odd screeching that could have been a squirrel warning others of a predator in the area. They also make a soft barking sound. Ears open...you don't know what you'll hear!!

You can learn some lessons by observing squirrels. For example, I’ve watched a squirrel come to me for a peanut and run away to bury it. He may do this 3 or 4 times before he returns to eat a peanut that he takes from me.  Perhaps that is where we get the term squirreling it away.

It’s winter now so please don’t forget to feed our wonderful animals who live outdoors, and this includes our furry squirrels!!!

Kathy,

We have a friend in Los Angeles who has squirrels on his patio, and they even visits him inside.  In Minnesota we had a huge walnut tree and they would drop walnuts on our dog who would be waiting under the tree to catch one...they had plenty of food.  A

We never see squirrels in my neighborhood.  Our pest control guy just today said they are there, but just don't come out much when people are around.  What a cool video of squirrel sounds.  I never knew this - how interesting!  I'll be listening now!

Michael Jacobs Mini-me got one to take a peanut from her and she was thrilled!!!

Debb Janes EcoBroker and Bernie Stea JD the pine cones are funny!!!   One of our squirrels will sit in one of our window feeders. We laughed so hard when one tried to climb up the pole to the bird feeder and was stopped by the baffle we have on it.

Thank you Myrl Jeffcoat Glad you like the GIF. It was hard trying to catch a video and hold the peanut out as well. And thank you for the feature in your group.

Ron and Alexandra Seigel that is so funny with the squirrel dropping walnuts down at the dog.

Roy Kelley wow, it is interesting how different squirrels look in different regions.

Bob "RealMan" Timm we used to buy dried corn cobs for the squirrels but they were going through them like water.

Yes they do Kathy Streib and the bulk of the kernels lay on the ground under the feeder.

Will Hamm when the big oak trees are dropping acorns, the squirrels love it. We keep around raw unsalted peanuts.

Paul S. Henderson, REALTOR®, CRS did you give them any treats??

Anna Banana Kruchten CRS, Phoenix Broker once you learn to recognize them, you'll hear them!!!  They will often freeze as well. They're warning others.

Kathy:

They sure are cute and inquisitive. What a fun post.

We have ground squirrels in our area and while they are cute as well they can create all kinds of damage to garden plans, and they dig holes everywhere!

They are fun to watch. I wasn't too happy with them though when I had a bird feeder and they kept getting all the food before the birds could get to it.

I remember the first time I saw black squirrels. I had no idea they existed and it was so exciting!
