Friday Fun…It’s Squirrel Appreciation Day
Yes, they’re rodents but they’re so darn cute!!!
When my uncle retired as an architect, he had fun doing two things…growing his roses and feeding his squirrels.
In Florida, we had squirrels that would come to see us as soon as we opened our garage door, or when Larry was in the driveway working on a car.
When we drive up after our morning walk, one is usually on the fence waiting for his morning treat. If we forget about them, they are at the window begging for their peanut.
Some are shy. I can tell that they want to take a peanut from me but they don’t want to get too close. That’s ok. They need to be cautious.
There is one who came up to me when I was outside on the phone with Margaret Rome Baltimore 410-530-2400 during her radio program. Thankfully, I had a peanut in my back pocket.
If you’ve been outdoors and heard an odd screeching that could have been a squirrel warning others of a predator in the area. They also make a soft barking sound. Ears open...you don't know what you'll hear!!
You can learn some lessons by observing squirrels. For example, I’ve watched a squirrel come to me for a peanut and run away to bury it. He may do this 3 or 4 times before he returns to eat a peanut that he takes from me. Perhaps that is where we get the term squirreling it away.
It’s winter now so please don’t forget to feed our wonderful animals who live outdoors, and this includes our furry squirrels!!!
