What I Learned About Networking

What I Learned From Networking

Grant Schneider recently wrote an excellent post Networking Is a Strategy.  He is a member of several Chambers of Commerce and is very active in professional and business networking groups.

While reading his posts, I started thinking about what I learned about networking when I started my staging business.

When I joined the Chamber of Commerce in Delray Beach and attended the new member luncheon, I received the best advice from a long-term member…don’t walk around with a handful of business cards passing them out to anyone and everyone you see.

She said… if you meet just 5 people and learn what they do and how you might benefit from each other's services, you'll be more effective.

I know that we’ve all been at functions where people are passing out cards as if they were candy…or now offering to AirDrop their information to your phone.

All you end up with are cards or contact information of people you don’t know.

What I Learned…

~Be judicious in providing your information. A person may not want or need it.

I was at one of the Chamber functions and I saw several different members walking through the crowd handing out their business cards. That’s it…nothing else unless someone stopped them to speak.

Personally, I prefer to ask someone if I can give them my card or information.

~Actually have a conversation with the person you meet. Learn what they do and what their needs may be.

My best and favorite agent whom I met and did business with for years was introduced to me by someone (who owned off-site storage facilities) at a C of C mixer. We were discussing our companies and he said to me…I want you to meet the best agent in Boca Raton! Of course, this was before I’d met Elyse Berman, PA

~Participate!  Just as in any organization (ActiveRain included) you will go further if you participate in groups or activities they have.

When I became an affiliate of the Women’s Council of Realtors, I participated in auctions and events whenever I could.  It was fun and I was able to get to know many agents.

If you decide to invest in networking to grow your business, you can help your investment pay off by following the above tips.

Wayne Martin you're right...it's not about how many cards you can hand out. Many will get tossed.

Kat Palmiotti Exactly. It's the best way to network.

Brian England I can remember seeing someone new to networking at the Chamber meeting...he walked through the room and handed out his cards to anyone and everyone there.

Norbert Fabre, MRSA Glad to help!!! Yes..Make it a point to meet and talk to 5 people rather than hand out a hundred cards!!!!  That would be a great idea for a post from you...your first networking event and how you did!!!

Nina Hollander, Broker I've not read it but it sounds like a good one. I can remember so many years ago the 7 am breakfasts I went to. It was nice but I never got any business from it. But it was the nature of that particular group.

Ed Silva I agree. It's so much better to chat and discover that you'd like to chat further!

Kathy we can pass out a ton of business cards at networking functions, but know one is going to do business with us, or refer clients to us unless they know who we are and are comfortable with us.

Hi Kathy:

That is all great events. For some the value of networking seems to be how many cards can they hand out rather than trying to make meaningful connections with a few people. It's not very effective and you don't get to know others that way.

Networking:  A supportive system of sharing information with individuals and groups having a common interest.

If we actually NETWORK ... we must meet -- shake hands, introduce, talk, share, gain information about each other, and LISTEN.

I am not impressed by how many cards you pass out.  It's all about connecting and learning and listening.  If I come away having made at least 1-2 connections I am happy to build relationship with those and see how we can be of benefit to one another.

Networking was a skill I was taught early on, in the first real estate office I entered back in 1981.  What was interesting however, was finding networks I could have overlooked.  Namely, those groups my kids were involved in.  There were the swim team parents.  There were parents of the boy scouts that my son belonged to.  The list went on and on.

Kathy Grant Schneider  is the master of networking, followed by my friend George Souto  personally I am not willing to give up my evenings, those are the times that are for my animals and cooking.... yes I leave money on the table but it is OK with me, make enough just from Internet Networking:) now with that said I agree with you, giving out business cards to people without asking... goes in the trash... like you I ask May I give you my card???  Endre

Hi Kathy,
One of the networking strategies I learned and loved was to NOT pass out business cards. Instead, we should have a conversation and ask the other party for their business card. This gave me their contact information and the opportunity to write them a personal note describing how I could help them.  Once they see you want to help them, they'll want to help you too.

I never found the collection of business cards very useful...most I have collected ended up in the trash.

Cards are just information unless you have some form of relationship to go along with it.

That is the BEST advice!   Meet people with the intent to get to know them.  Don't just start talking about your business.   If you understand about their business and know what they are looking for in a relationship, you'll stand a much better chance of doing business with them.

If I had $1 for everyone that attempted to introduce me to a solar company I'd be rich!    Anyone who knows me, knows I already have LOTS of solar contacts.

Excellent advice Kathy!  I am a big networker and have been for many years both with the chamber and groups I started and chaired for many, many years.  What's  so cool about that is many of my business associates became clients as well  and  are good friends to this day. We're planning on a Memorial Party and you got it.....they're all from networking groups!  It's more like a big family to me - much like ActiveRain!

Great insight, I concur.  I love being part of our local chamber of commerce since these are people and companies actively trying to grow their business - which is great for my business.
