Think Someone Made a HUGE Mistake in MLS

I was doing some stats for areas I prefer to work in, and saw an average-sized home in MLS listed for $7,149,000!     So, had to click on it to see what the deal was.  

 

Well, someone had been in the MLS doing a price reduction, but accidentally added an extra "0".    Out of courtesy for my fellow REALTOR®, I left the Kentwood agent a message.   Hope he gets a chuckle out of it.

 

Now that $7 million amount will be in his MLS forever.   I have seen mistakes like this, and they cannot be taken out completely.   

 

Bottom line, check and re-check your data entry before hitting submit!

Hi Joan:

I see lots of errors like this when looking at the MLS especially for my monthly market reports. There's lots of carelessness out there and it doesn't always get caught by the MLS.

I have also seen homes go on market for $25,000 where they forgot the extra 0. It can be corrected but some agents just let it go

A good MLS maintenance person should be able to override the incorrect pricing, otherwise it can really skew the stats later.

Georgie, I think his assistance went back in and changed the price.  Still shows up in the history, but at least won't skew anything more.

Manhattan doesn't have an MLS- and it's a free for all on battle for the listing systems dominance. While $7m doesn't stand out in Manhattan, it does set records in my concentration of northern Manhattan properties. We just had a new record set above $7 million for a townhouse up here- and it was the sale of Neil Patrick Harris' townhouse. I can also remember we had the former estate of James Bailey (the Bailey in the Barnum & Bailey circus fame- though P.T. Barnum far outshone his partner) listed back right before everything crashed in 2008. It was initially listed for $10 million, and ultimately sold for $1.4m in an all cash sale- an 86% discount. The house has since had tremendous investment into it- and has been since used for TV filming but is mostly used as a primary residence.

That's a big ZERO!  Yes, the history of a listing doesn't go away and unfortunately, the spin on that kind of error doesn't stop either!
