What's new in Waikiki?   Lawson Station - If Trader Joe and 7/11 had a love child! Nippon's notion of convenience is right at home in Honolulu.    Waikiki is a resort and residential neighborhood in continual transformation, with people and establishments changing with the tides. I am constantly amazed at just how much change goes on in Waikiki and What's new in Waikiki is an occasional serial post highlighting new businesses and places to visit in world famous Waikiki, Hawai'i.    Lawson Station at the Ala Moana Surfrider in Waikiki. What's new in Waikiki? Moncler makes a splash, no seriously & The Ritz starts to rise, no dysfunction. Waikiki is a resort and residential neighborhood in constant flux, with people and establishments coming and going in an endless flow of change and adaptation. I am constantly amazed at just how much change goes on in Waikiki and What's new in Waikiki is an occasional serial post highlighting new businesses and places to visit in world famous Waikiki, Hawai'i.      Nothing is more oddly juxtaposed, in my estimation, than a luxury winter sport and outerwear legend like Moncler and the sun soaked tropicality of Waikiki. It seems rather quixotic that one would find the renowned French/Italian winter-wear and mountain lifestyle brand just yards away, from the lapping surf of the tropical P...

Knowing your Banana from your Lauhala: Not all tropical matting is created equal- This reformatted and updated post first appeared in 2009.    Hawaiiana or tropical decor is a popular design aesthetic here is Hawaii   and often makes use of natural materials in it's designs. Natural matting (matting created from the weaving of palm or plant leaves) is a warm, eco-friendly, and sustainable product found in many homes here in Hawaii and is often referred to as Lauhala. From the multi-million dollar estates in Diamond Head and Kahala to the country cottages of Makaha this all natural palm matting can be utilized in many ways from flooring to veneers to wall coverings, to ceiling treatments.   What most people here in Hawaii refer to as Lauhala matting is actually several different varietie...

Kimo's Advent Calendar: Seasonal Sounds in Door #24.   Mele Kalikimaka  The Seasonal Sounds of Christmas in Hawai'i is unlike anywhere else on earth. Hawaiian music is marked by a number of different singing styles that evolved over time since the arrival of westerners in the late 18th Century and the introduction of stringed instruments to Hawaiian culture. The most recognizable Hawaiian style of music is the falsetto voice along with the iconic twang of the slack key guitar, ukulele, and bass.  My last Advent Door in the Series is all about the sound of Christmas in Hawai'i! Please enjoy this musical interlude Hawaiian style and may your Holiday Season be merry and bright! Kimo's Advent Calendar: Ono Grinds in Door #21.   "Ono Grinds"  Means delicious food in pidgin and one of Hawai'i's iconic Ono grinds is the Manapua. Creole Pidgin was the melting pot default language of the Hawai'i plantation culture as contract workers came from the four corners of the earth to meet the labor demands of the Sugar and and Pineapple industries. It's mishmash of different linguistic influences made it easier for immigrants to learn quickly and communicate with one another. Today it is still spoken in the more rural parts of Hawai'i and it's colloquial charm is what many consider the "local" vernacular as the Hawaiian language was virtually extinct until the Hawaiian Renaissance of the early 1970's revived it from obscurity. Pidgin is a true multicultural, somewhat inexpl...

Yeah, there are people who will disagree and say there is nothing better than shopping in Waikiki over visiting the Honolulu Zoo. But I ask you where else can you order a lunch consisting of a rectangular hard-pressed mountain of rice, dribbled in syrup and topped with two hibachi-style chicken breasts, cooked to perfection? Sure, all you have to do is scrub off the terriayki syrup and all is well and fine, unless of course you need a straw with which to sip your soda pop because you can't have straws around animals at the zoo. Unless you look like a responsible adult at the Honolulu Zoo. You can read more in my personal blog today and see photographs of Goodbye Waikiki Designer Stores and Honolulu Zoo. Then you can make up your own mind.
