politics: Cane Creek Ridge, Mountain Lots in Sylva, NC - 09/06/15 10:43 PM
Cane Creek Ridge is only one of many mountain communities tucked away amongst the ranges of Western North Carolina and it is one of my favorites.  People who choose to locate their home in Cane Creek Ridge all have one thing in common, they want privacy and the splendor of the mountains but they don't want to be isolated.  Located conveniently between Sylva and Waynesville, NC, Cane Creek Ridge supplies exactly what these folks are looking for.

All of the lots are a minimum of 2.5 acres, providing plenty of privacy buffer and the experience of living surrounded by nature but the … (3 comments)

politics: June 6, 1982 and Kristin Lems...I Remember Them Like it Was Yesterday - 03/11/13 03:01 PM
For me, music may be the most powerful association to memories. I woke up today, bound and determined to find a video of an artist named Kristin Lems performing a song called "My Mom's a Feminist". If a video exists, I couldn't find it on YouTube. I remember the lyrics as if yesterday was June 6, 1982. You know how YouTube works, if you have the adventuring spirit to follow the path down the rabbit hole you can discover treasures of incredible value. While I didn’t find what I was looking for, I did find a couple of others to … (14 comments)

politics: Nothing Else Made Sense...Monday Melodies - 01/21/13 12:35 PM
This morning I listened to so many different pieces of music, getting ready to post to Monday Melodies.  Nothing felt right, so I decided to wait until later.  As soon as Kelly Clarkston was in the middle of singing "My Country Tis of Thee" today at the Inauguration, I knew nothing else would make sense to post today but the music from today's Presidential ceremonies.     There aren't any recordings of patriotic songs in the house...never have been, but like everyone in America, I grew up singing these songs all through school.   They are supremely familiar to me and … (11 comments)

politics: Not Feeling the Charitable Thing ... for a Select Group Anyway - 12/21/12 09:16 PM
This season I'm admitting to not feeling very charitable towards the Congress as a stereotypical whole.  They are worse than students with their homework!  It shouldn't have mattered that there were elections going on this year.  They knew what the assignment was and they knew what the due date was and just like students, they talked on the phone with their friends, they went to parties, they did everything but study for their homework.  All of a sudden (not) they realize it's time to turn in the assignment and all they have are excuses.  Apparently it is everyone's fault but … (13 comments)

politics: I Wish It Was As Easy as Kumbaya - 12/15/12 10:37 PM
I wish the cure was as easy as a few rounds of “Kumbaya” and really… if everyone hummed a few bars mentally together once in a while it would make a small difference but that’s a pretty unrealistic solution to tragic events like the horrific loss of life in Connecticut on Friday.
Once the initial reporting occurred, the talking heads and pundits proceeded to do what they do best…saturate us with blah blah blah non stop. I have to believe on a personal level, everyone speaking to the matter initially wrestled like we all did with the horror of the situation. … (25 comments)

politics: That Happened...That Really Happened, A Brilliant Post Election Litany - 11/08/12 02:14 PM
That happened...that really happened.  Say what you will about some so-called "talking heads"...there are a few shining examples of a few who are so much more.  One in particular, IMHO, is Rachel Maddow of MSNBC.  She is one host who never seems to be trying to trap her guests into "Gotcha" moments and always seems to be sincere in wanting to learn more about different viewpoints than strictly broadcasting her own opinions.    It turns out that I missed a segment of her show the evening after the election and Leslie told me that it was important that I catch it on Rachel's … (11 comments)

politics: No Glitz...No Glamor...No Artwork...But lots of pride in our country - 11/06/12 12:53 PM
The system worked in spite of corporations being deemed being "people" and money as "speech".  Votes could not be suppressed, thwarted or purchased. Thousands and thousands of well meaning volunteers on both sides of the political spectrum have worked their hearts out...and...
Hallelujah...no more robo calls, no more signs on the highways, no more negative television commercials and citizens can find some relief from the unrelenting campaign saturation that has inundated our lives...we are exhausted from politics and polarization.
Time to move on with the business of life and to be able to look at each other without first defining each other … (12 comments)

politics: 2012 Elections - We're Done! Jackson County, NC Polling Spots & Hours - 11/04/12 08:45 AM
Well, I’m relieved. Leslie and I went to our local polling place at the Balsam Willets Ochre Hill Fire Department yesterday and took advantage of early voting. Now it won’t matter if we get held up time wise at work or worry about the weather turning bad…we’ve gone ahead and exercised our right to vote.
Early voting is wonderful and for those who have been trying to eliminate or reduce the time available for voting early completely mystify me. Jackson County alone has more than 28,000 registered voters…and we’re a small county. As it was, even with our handy dandy … (7 comments)

politics: The Principal of the Thing - Alternative to Special Interest Backing - 10/28/12 07:03 AM
When you run for public office and you prefer not to be in the pocket of special interest groups because your goal is to actually represent the whole community   How do you pay for a political campaign when your goal is to represent the interests of your ENTIRE community, instead of being in the pocket of special interest groups?  Well, of course you try to fundraise on a personal and local level but sometimes you need to think outside of the box and concentrate on the reach you do have!   It is very much like a phone tree.  … (4 comments)

politics: Stones in the Road - Monday Melodies & A Bit of Free Speech - 09/23/12 10:51 PM
Interestingly enough, the last post I read before turning in last night was by Karen Anne Stone (apologies for no link...I can't figure out how to put one in while in HTML) referring back to one by Greg Nino talking about whether or not ActiveRain is an appropriate public forum for speaking our minds politically.   Lots of people weighed in on both posts, that's part of what makes this arena so addictive.  Very rarely is there any censorship or public stonings by people speaking out.  Do I think it is appropriate to talk only about politics in a real … (10 comments)

politics: Tell Me Why - Declan Galbraith...Music on Mondays - 04/15/12 09:57 PM

Real and significant change in our treatment of each other depends in great part on how children view the world and how they learn to respect each other.
The first time I saw Declan Galbraith’s video was several years ago. Normally, children’s videos don’t hold my attention but this message was so powerful and the words so compelling that I’ve never forgotten it. Maybe it’s because our political theater is about to kick into high gear? Maybe it’s because so many in power are immoveable in their opinions on what’s just and fair for another? Maybe it’s because a young man’s … (16 comments)
