Dog and cat sales to be banned in West Hollywood, California

My owner is a Realtor for Century 21 Award in San Diego's Mission ValleySouthern California's answer to the City of Berkeley and San Francisco's Haight-Ashbury District is West Hollywood.

All three areas are known to be a little out of the ordinary, a little quirky, a little unusual....

West HollywoodWest Hollywood recognizes pets as companions and their owners as guardians, but in an effort to curb the sale of cats and dogs from "kitty factories" and "puppy mills," beginning September 1, 2010, the sale of cats and dogs within the city limits will be illegal. Pet shops will be permitted to offer animals from shelters, similar to what many pet shops here in San Diego do.

There are plenty of cats and dogs in our animal shelters that need forever homes without needing kitty factories and puppy mills, so I'm all for this new law. I hope other cities, counties, and states will eventually follow suit.

Way to go West Hollywood!!!!!  As I sit here working with my two forever friends I agree 100% with such a law.  There are so many deserving pets that need great homes.  Shelters need to focus on the forever home also.

More opinions than you want to hear about.

Great lack of foresight and intelligence on the bureaucrats.  If only breeding mistakes are allowed to be sold, where is the future of companion animals?  Good laws to control puppy mills and other animal factories need to be enacted, but total ban on deliberately bred offspring is absurd.

Hi Jim,

I also agree with the new law.  It's a way to curb over population of dogs & cats. Animal shelters throughout our county euthanize animals everyday - why breed more!  If people want to add a new pet to the family - adopt don't shop!  I hope other cities and counties follow suit as well.

Hey, everyone.

Thanks for stopping by and commenting.

I have read all the comments, but since this post is rather old, rather than making comments here in my post to each and every one of you, I'll just let everyone know that I have read all the comments and if there are any questions, I'll answer those. Otherwise I'll simply post this comment and then head over to your blogs soon to visit and do some reading and commenting. I hope you'll have a nice welcome mat out for me!

I'm still fighting to get an escrow closed that was supposed to close last week. As soon as I get everyone to jump through all these hoops, I hope to get back to being more regular here at ActiveRain rather than waiting until the weekend to do all my posts and reciprocal comments.

Don't forget to let your cat come out to play with all the other ActiveRain kitties. Your cat-friendly dogs can come, too!

If you need a great cat book, get yourself a copy of Peg Silloway's The Cat Lover's Book of Days.

Hope all is well with everyone.
