ActiveRain: Fun, friends, knowledge, problems, and, of course, points

Contact Jim Frimmer for all your San Diego real estate needsWhen my marketing guru/favorite home inspector/husband suggested that I join ActiveRain, blog, read, and comment, my first reaction was, "Huh?"

Since I joined, I've become somewhat addicted to the system. It's fun, has provided me with lots of new friendships (even if many of them are still virtual), has taught me a lot, and has allowed me to contribute to my profession.

Does it have problems? Sure. Some of them have recently been talked about in a Featured Post by Glenn Roberts titled Good Points from ActiveRain.

I'm not one to get involved in controversies about anything. I just think controversies bring too much stress into my life. However, I did comment on Glenn's post. It was by far my longest comment ever, and I thought my comment would make a good post itself. If you haven't read Glenn's post, read it first.

Here are my comments about the ActiveRain system:

  1. As you get more points, you find out that it becomes much easier to get more points. For example, early in January I think it was, everyone who was #1 in their profession here at ActiveRain got 5,000 points. That didn't seem fair, so I did a post about the people who were second and third in their professions here at ActiveRain and suggested that at a minimum, they award 2,500 and 1,000 points to the Silver and Bronze medalists, respectively, which they did.
  2. If you participate regularly, the points will come, even if you have a thousand blog posts but only four featured, like me. I have noticed that the 80/20 rule seems to work here as far as featured posts go, with 80% of the featured posts by the same people. I've also noticed that the more controversial or doom-and-gloom your posts are, the more likely they are to be featured. Maybe there's a reason why the media constantly features doom-and-gloom news. The general public seems to want it.
  3. It also seems to me that the East Coast members get featured more often than the West Coast members, perhaps because there are Staff members on the East Coast, where the ActiveRain servers are also located, and when they wake up they check their favorite East Coast bloggers. If they find something good, they feature it. Well, there can only be so many featured posts, so once the quota is achieved using the East Coast posts, no more are allowed, regardless of how good they are.
  4. Has anyone besides me noticed that featured posts come in groups? We can go a day or more with no new featured posts, and then all of a sudden, we'll have ten or so featured posts show up in a couple of hours or so. I wonder if it has anything to do with all the Raincamps that are occurring and the fact that lots of Staff members are at the Raincamps rather than reading blog posts.
  5. I've also noticed that if you can get Lenn Harley to comment on your blog post, you have a high probability of it being featured.
  6. If you don't think points are important, ask someone who has several hundreds of thousands of points to give you, say, 50,000 or so. Ain't gonna happen.
  7. I remember when Todd Clark was having a contest to award 50,000 of his points to the person who came closest to guessing when he would achieve that one millionth point. Not 50,000 points, but 50,000 of HIS points. I haven't seen his total go down by 50,000, but it sure went up rapidly when he had 20 or so of his posts featured on the day he got to one million.
  8. Sure it takes a lot of persistent and consistent work to get hundreds of thousands of points, but it also has something to do with longevity. Just because someone found ActiveRain before someone else did, they get rewarded with thousands of points? Well, life isn't fair, and neither is ActiveRain. Accept it, deal with it, make the most of it, and move on.
  9. Instead of just recognizing those with hundreds of thousands of points, maybe they should recognize those who get the most points on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis. I might be in the running then. LOL

Happy Memorial Day weekend to everyone!

I don't know who should be recognized or why, but I sure know that a ton of blog posts come out of your household, between the two of you!  I don't know why a few of my posts have gotten featured, but I do notice that I get a few more subscribers after each feature.  It seems to expose me to people who might not otherwise have found my posts, so I do appreciate the features.

I do not blog or comment for points, but I won't turn down the points either.  There are days when I make only a few comments and days when I post more comments than the ten for which I can get points. Some of it depends on the amount of time I have for Active Rain on a given day, or it might just be that some days have more posts that catch my attention.

I really appreciate the friends I have made here, and I include you as one of them.

Hey, Gene - No you did not. #2 in the City, County, or State doesn't cut it. You had to have been overall #2 among all of your compatriots here at ActiveRain. Yet ActiveRain says it's not about points. If it wasn't about points, they wouldn't make those kinds of awards.

Hey, Susan - I sure hope you get to come down here in September since I don't think we're going anywhere too far too soon.

Hey, Paula - A hundred thousand points since February is a pretty darn good haul.

Hey, Jane - I only have to do five posts now that I got this one out of the way. LOL

Jim - I don't recall seeing an announcement regarding who won Todd Clark's 50,000 point contest yet.

It seems that considerably fewer posts are featured on the weekend.

Hi, Jim:

I try to keep up with my ActiveRain posts, along with my day job. Sometimes I get discouraged when I see featured posts that don't seem to be markedly "better" than some I've written. I have never had a featured post--despite all the time I've been on ActiveRain I still haven't figured out how to write a post that gets featured. Thanks for the tip about doom and gloom, but I don't know if I can come up with anything like that! I'll just continue to work on adding to my point levels the slow way, I guess.

Cheers,

Robin

Jim,

I think you are quite right. But, as you probably know it's almost impossible to pass any of the active members in your own area. Basically, without going overboard, there are only so many points per week.

Jim...You have provided alot of food for thought.  I just continue to plug along and enjoy AR, make new friends and learn from lots of posts.  The longer you are an AR participant the more points you will eventually accumulate but for me the value of AR is much more than the points.

Yes why not?  Then we can feature posts for everyone who hasn't been featured, one by one.  LOL

Just happened to follow up and discovered you did make a blog out of your comment. Thanks for both. I guessI get 25 points for this comment. It won't be long enough to make a blog our of it, unless I attached an appropriate picture, say of a cat?

As for Debra and Robin's comments, I'd like to join that group but I've had a feature, I think. I didn't get a star for it or any points. Perhaps it was a virtual feature.

Glenn-Hhhmmmm how could you have a feature but no points?  Although like you said you don't have a star.  But if you had a feature you should talk to the powers that be and they will give you a star.   :-)

Hey, Everyone - Thanks for stopping by and taking the time to comment.

I'm trying to catch up on all my blog posts since I've been neglecting the, for good cause, though, since I've been busy.

Since this post is quite old, I won't respond to each and every comment. Rather, I'll read through all the comments and respond to any that have questions or otherwise need a response.

I'll also be by your blog soon to return the favor by reading your posts and leaving comments, too. Do unto others as they have already done unto you. lol

Again, thanks for stopping by and taking the time to comment. Make it a great day, a great week, a great month, and finish out 2010 on a natural high!
