Today We Can Celebrate Those Who Give of Themselves...Look to the Sky... and Top it Off with a Special Treat!
Yes, it's another one of my National Holiday posts! And since it's Friday we need a day to ease us into the weekend!
August 19 is World Humanitarian Day. It is a day to honor, appreciate, recognize and thank those who give up their time, and give of themselves to help those in need. Aid workers go where they are needed and that may mean Haiti, Japan, Somalia, and yes, even Afghanistan. Did you know that in 2010, 242 aid workers were killed, injured or kidnapped?
It's also National Aviation Day! In 1939, President Franklin Roosevelt proclaimed this day, which also coincides with Orville Wright's (as in Wilbur and Orville) birthday. We've been to the National Air & Space Museum at least 10 times (hubby is a former F-4 pilot) and see something different each time. If you get a chance go.. in fact take in as much of the Smithsonian as you can! Oh and yes, the Spirit of St. Louis can be seen at the Museum!
And finally, what would a National Holiday be without some observance of food and so as not to disappoint...it's National Root Beer Float Day...or Black Cow Day! Alledgely a Mr. Frank Wisner was inspired to place a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top of his root beer after looking out his window one night. The Full moon allowed him to see the snow on top of Cow Mountain. I'm not sure I think of that when I have a root beer float but I do love them.
So Thanks to the Many Aid Workers for all that you do!
Flying is for the Birds!
And...yes, I'd like some whipped cream for my Root Beer Float!
