Promise You Won’t Tell My Husband But I Actually Got Tired of Shopping Yesterday!

One Little Day in the Life of a Stager

Shocking isn’t it.  I mean I used to work across the street from the Mother shopping bagsShip (The Galleria Mall in Houston)  and went there every day!  And as a Home Stager, part of my job involves shopping for home furnishings.   We need to continuously keep our eyes open  for interesting pieces to add to our Home Staging inventory.

Furniture, accessories, linens, artwork.... they all become worn and need to be updated or replaced.  And there are pieces we need to add to our inventory that will enhance a particular style of architecture.

And, as in the case yesterday, I needed to furnish a condo with inventory that will remain with the property.  Now under different circumstances this would have been a shopper’s delight.  But I needed to squeeze about 4 days worth of shopping into one.

We’d waited for weeks to get the final OK from the seller and to get the unit cleaned and ready to go; throw in the holidays and we got it but not until early this week.  Wanting Village Square, delray beachto take full advantage of our selling season, we pushed to make sure the condo was staged as soon as we could and that meant a One Day Shopping trip for me.

I began yesterday (Thursday) morning and at the end of the day I’d reached my limit.

That is something I’ve never experienced!  If you’d handed me the “Don’t Leave Home Without It” card and said have at it, I doubt I would have had the energy,

It’s Not Called Work Because It’s Easy!

Trying to furnish a home in one day... to help show the possibilities and liveability of the home is what we do.

Yesterday I was all shopped out!  But with another staging around the corner I have a sense that feeling has passed and the shopping gene will kick in.

(Sh-h-h-h Don’t tell my husband Larry)

Kathy - That is so funny.  I've experienced that a few times...but usually it only happens when I'm exhausted.

Gabe- it is in the "Code of Women Shoppers" that we do not spread any momentary lapses to fellow shoppers.  Sorry.

Wallace- Oh I love Amazon for my own shopping!  Prime!!

Debbie-I think that may have been what it was... and my husband could even hear it in my voice!

Kathy, as they say 'it's a tough job but SOMEBODY'S got to do it'!

Seriously though I give you credit for the dedication you give to your profession - it's really NOT easy to keep shopping ALL the time for just that right piece...  Take a break and YOU will be ready for more I'm sure!

Kathy, tired of shopping???  As I get older, I must admit that "the thrill is gone sooner" but I rejuvenate quickly after a little something from Starbucks.  It does become wearing when you have a deadline and can lose its charm.

Kathy don't worry your secret is safe with me.  Larry will never know :)  My wife is just the opposite than most she dislikes shopping with a vengeance.  I mean this lady doesn't even like running down to the local market to shop.

Kathy - I have a new condo listing and I, too, shopped for some staging articles yesterday.  My cart was so full they called an employee to help me carry packages to the car.  I was exhausted after I finished, but I can"t wait to see how it all comes together this afternoon.

Pamela-the hardest part is trying to fit things in a shopping cart, then set it somewhere and fill up another one, check out and load it in the cart!

Joanna- oh.. it's already worn off... I'm ready to go again.. almost!

Cathy- good for you.  We wouldn't want that to happen too often.

John- oh... I have friends like that.  Could never quite understand it, but that's ok.

Norma- oh that's the reward... setting everything up and seeing how the home comes to life!

Craig ... the check is in the mail!!!

Kathy - I can relate and for me I have a point which my brain is just too fried to pick out anything more. I have to take a break and go back with fresh eyes. It doesn't happen often, but like you said, buying accessories for an entire condo in one day would wipe me out too!

I get that way when I'm on a "binge" for some project for another as well.  But then I start to miss it if I don't have to buy anything for a while.

Yes, I'm addicted!

Shopping is fun until you HAVE to do it, then it becomes burdensome. Thus I get the 'shopped out' feeling. I am sure your staging passion will guide you safely back into your shopping spirit :-)

Oh Kathy - I so understand where you are coming from! One of the model homes we did last year was just like this and it was a luxury million dollar bungalow that we had to buy everything for in a period of 2 days. I went home and told my husband if I never saw another store I'd die a happy woman - he nodded, made sympathetic 'there there' sounds, patted me on the head and knew that the feeling would pass. It did but it DID take almost a week before I was ready and willing to do more sourcing for another client!

Wow! Four days of shopping into one is beyond over stimulating. You are truly beyond organized. I am already exhausted just by the thought. As for telling him, its our secret here...:)!

Hi Kathy--oh, I think the shopping genes just need a brief rest but will be rarely to go tomorrow.  I must say there are times when I max out, especially doing redesigns and looking for things like floor tile and back splashes.  Otherwise, I have not found a limit--except to the number of stores here on Maui.  That send you home early no matter what!!!

I can so relate. I've worn a path to the stores and am on auto-pilot driving to them. I'm just so happy that the holiday decor is stored/sold/gone at the stores as it makes it so difficult to find the accessories you need or want.

Hi Kathy - I so understand what you are saying!  Shopping can be fun, but when you are trying to find particular things and have a deadline, it can be exhausting!  "Power shopping" is not for the faint of heart!

Think that would have tired out the best of shoppers Kathy. Just around Christmas time, I felt exactly the same way, even the Visa card said it was tired.

I didn't know you used to worked across from the Galleria!  I was just their the other day and they still had the gigantic Christmas tree up.  Boy, has it changed!  Staging shopping vs. personal casual shopping are totally different.  It can been extremely stressful, when you're trying to find items on a deadline, or that go with the house that is being staged, especially when it's for a client.  I've found I don't shop for myself too much anymore. : (
