Breaking News Tom Clancy:  dead at the age of 66

One of our friends sent me an email about an hour or so ago that Tom Clancy passed away today.  This made me reflect.

In my observation very few people like to talk about death. It is not a pleasant subject. We all think we have a long time and it is far away.

The older we get to more it becomes a reality that we are not immortal. Hence we should be mentally and emotionally prepared that it is an inevitability and the question is just when.

Needless to say famous, infamous or just ordinary we can die without a moment’s notice from various causes, accidents, being at the wrong place at the wrong time, health reasons and I could go on and on.

Ironically I was just about to start one of his books yesterday. This one he has written a while back “The Cardinal of the Kremlin” work and life stepped in and needless to say did not start reading it as planned.

So getting your house in order one should not postpone because it can happen anytime. Just as I tend to procrastinate I am sure many of you are out there as well.

Many o f you might have read or seen “The Hunt for Red October” this one probably is been one of his most well known novels.  President Ronald Reagan probably helped him get to be on the best seller list. There was a photo of the late President holding the book in his hand as he was crossing the lawn at the white house. IF any of you have this picture feel free to post it in the comments. I just remember it clear as day! (Ironically I lent this book out and never got it back) On a side note I remember seeing him drive on Sunset Blvd in a convertible with his trademark Admiral Baseball Cap.

Endre: Yes life is short and we are spiritual beings moving around in a body so that we can grow through this experience called life. Tom Clancy was a great writer and his spiritual role was to make us think. I am 68 and now give it thought everyday and pray that God will allow me to grow as a better person. Growth happens in all dimensions.

Endre - This is sudden and very sad news.  At the age of 66, oh so young, with so much more to give.  Make each moment count, get your home in order, and be sure to tell your loved ones, those that matter in your life, how much you appreciate them!  You never know when there will not be a second chance!

Endre- I heard the news this morning and, yes it is sad news.  I've always loved his books and don't know if I could pick my favorite, but it is probably the Hunt for Red October.

My Donald is going to be really sad to hear this and I'm not sure he did before he went to be.  Has to be up really early.  I have read a couple of his books because sometimes when I loose my husband to a book for a few days I have to see what was so good about that book.

Endre, Tom cost me many hours of sleep, but it was well worth it!  He's the only author of current fame that I would buy the books of as soon as I could lay hands on them and read them as quick as I could.  I'll miss the Jack Ryan series of books and those about John Clark and Jack Jr.

Endre-Yes, he was a very good writer. I enjoyed the series of non-fiction books where he was embedded with service personnel to get a better understanding of thier training and mission. I remember one book on submarines, and another on airborne forces. He'll be missed.

incredible writer, who almost seemed wired into the intelligence and defense networks in the US.  definitely a loss for the publishing world.  that said, your more general observations are well taken -- we need to appreciate and celebrate each day!
