There Was A “Pop” in The Electrical Panel When The Dryer Breaker Was Turned On.

I have a lot of property maintenance staff who call me with issues that they are having on their apartment buildings. I don’t mind helping them out over the phone because I know that they will call me when they hit a problem that they cannot fix themselves. Today was one of those days.

An apartment in Sacramento had no power to the clothes dryer, it would not start. There had been work done in the electrical panel but not with the dryer breaker. The maintenance supervisor opened the electrical panel and didn’t see any “tripped” breakers, so he shout off the dryer breaker and back on again. He was startled by the “pop”, and shut off the breaker. He then called me.

Having had a similar experience recently I was confident that I knew what the problem was. When the work was done inside the electrical panel by the other contractor, the panel screw caused the problem. Whether or not the contractor knew of the problem is anyone’s guess. But this is what I found.

Knowing the way the wires are pulled into the box, I had a feeling that the screw clipped the insulation off the wiring when screwed into the panel cover. I’m not sure why the screws are so long but you can see that the wires were well inside the panel before the screw finally reached it.

Replacing the screw with shorter ones will be easy, fixing the damaged wiring may be a bit of a task. You may want to contact a contractor.

Thanks Marti. Did I mention that I too had drove a screww through a wire in the same fashion? I was memorable!  :)

Which is why long, sharp, wood screws are prohibited from being used for the cover of the electric panel box!  They should be short, flat-ended and they have a different thread.

You licked the damaged cable to make sure the screw penetrated all the way to the wire, right?

Hi Tom,

I see this from time to time. The wrong screw can really "Screw with you". I like Jays comment. LOL

Have a great day in Placerville.

Hi Tom, thanks for sharing this.  This type of problem is rather common, though not right at the box.

When I was a bride, I was married to an electrician.  I don't mind taking on minor home repair tasks around my house.  But, electricity scares the bejebbers outta me.  A couple of years ago, I bought new white recepticals for my house, to replace where old almond ones had been.  I could rationalize what it took to replace them myself.  I'd seen it done many times.  Yet, when I stood there in front of the things with tools in hand, I shook, hesitated, and reached for the phone. . ."John, do you remember that when we divorced, I didn't ask for child support or alimony?"  I was actually quite amazed at how rapidly John showed up to do the replacements for me.  GUILT can be such a wonderful thing

'Poping' in panels is never a good sign. Time to call a pro!

But this does illustrate that the safety devices, the breakers, did work as designed. They shut off when there was a problem. The metal panel box did it's safety job in that it contained the 'arc' and no fire was ignited.

As others have said the 'screws' were the problem, but the homeowner wasn't because the equipment worked as designed.
