Wow! A Professional & Helpful Agent Answered the Phone!

The last few days the phone has been ringing off the hook for a new listing. Always good to know there are interested buyers as our market has slowed down a bit. All of the inquiring buyers agents have been extremely cordial and professional.

What I wasn't expecting is that most of the agents seemed very surprised
that I was so cordial and helpful to them - and they told me so!

Working with Professional Real Estate Agents

My normal style is to give co-op agents as much information as possible and make it extremely easy for them to show at their convenience.  It seems to me like like it's a win-win all the way around to always be professional. It's highly likely I'll be working with one of these agents on an offer(s) and for goodness sakes I want the process to start off on the right foot (and of course stay there till the closing).

In the last week or so I've read a couple of  blog posts wondering where all the professional agents have gone. Agents have been frustrated that co-op agents either don't answer the phone or are less then helpful regarding their listing and/or showings.  Now who does this make sense too? Nobody that I know! Why in heavens name would you not do your best to showcase your clients properties and work well with other agents?  If the clients knew they were being represented so poorly I'm sure they'd be pretty steamed. They hire us for a reason - to do an excellent job for them. And yes I know I'm probably speaking to the choir in this crowd. The agents that need to read this aren't reading posts and/or taking notes on how to create a successful long term business. But if they are please do consider changing your attitude and start working well with all other agents. It will be so much better for you - and everybody else in the loop. Trust me on this one - seriously!

Gosh Anna, if an agent isn't super-polite when they're getting calls on a new listing, I can't even imagine what it would be like as the transaction progresses. I imagine you are cheery ALL of the time :)

Kathleen I've been reading a couple of posts about this lately and didn't give it much attention until I started getting responses.  We are all leaders of self and it starts with us - as you well know!  Was thinking of you and wanted to know!

Karen we've all had 'those' transactions and all we can do is our best and get them closed. And then go on to the next......  LOL - actually I normally am very happy.

I'm afraid I find myself expecting the worst whenever I seek a service, so I'm always pleasantly surprised to receive good customer service! Kudos to you for upholding the standard!

That is my number one job as a listing agent. Get other agents in the property. You are right. Make it as easy as possible. It is very surprising the number of agents who don't.

Hi Anna,

I don't get agents that are not helpful and courteous.  Although in NJ many agents are not always pleasant.  We always answer the phone with a smile and try to help as much as we can.  Golden rule and all.

Today, I was on the phone with a client when I got an incoming call. I returned the call even though, I didn't know who made it or why. At least, they can give me an A for effort.

It is great to hear stories like that. I wrote about my experience over the weekend when 3 times callers were just pleased I answered the phone full of teals of how many they called that did not.

Real estate requires cooperation and focus. I don't always answer my phone because my attention may be focused on another part of my job, but I return calls promptly if the caller leaves a message.

Anna - One good for you representing real estate agents well! Secondly, kudos tot he agents who let you know what a great job you are doing. Sometimes I am surprised at how helpful some agents can be while others make you feel like you are bothering them to SELL their listing.

What's crazy is the one thing you should be expected to do at the very least is answer the phone...hmmm...maybe they make an app for that! (and they call it a "smart" phone) Who would have thought you have to answer the thing?

It always seems to be a problem to get someone on the phone.  I found texting to be more effective in getting to the listing agent.  I would love it if they answered the phone or returned calls about getting their listing sold.  :)

It looks like I'm late to this party, but kudos to you for being so cordial. Unfortunately, not all Realtors are Equal...I can't tell you how many times I have tried to reach another Realtor who has not returned the call - Grrr!

There is nothing better in this business than dealing with a happy, cooperative, knowledgeable agent.

There are some out there that are just jerks!
