Do I Have to Leave It?

I was reading another thought-provoking post by Richie Alan Naggar , and it smartphonereminded me of well…. me.

One of my goals has been to go as paperless as I can, whether for work or my personal life. Show me a gadget or an app, and I’m all over it.

Files and photos for work can be found in Dropbox or Google Drive.  I do have redundancies for backup, and yes, part of that does include paper.

I have shopping lists, phone numbers, photos… all on my iPhone.

And so it was that one day something needed to be worked on with my phone.  Nothing major, but the gentleman at Verizon ask me…

“Can you leave it with us for 45 minutes?”

I stood there, iPhone in hand, and for a few seconds, I couldn’t move.

“You want me to leave my iPhone? And go run errands?”

It was almost as if my life flashed before me, but instead of my life, it was everything I had on the phone, and wouldn’t have with me.

Target was less than 5 minutes away, but my Target list was on my phone. How would I know what to buy?

Of course, I could have just waited there at Verizon, but even then, they would have my phone.  I couldn’t get on ActiveRain, Facebook, my email, the news while I waited because they would have my iPhone.

“What if someone tries to call me?” (That was the least of my worries!)

I bit the bullet and drove to Target...without a phone!  Yikes!  Did we ever live like that?

Going to pick up my phone must be like what a parent feels when picking up their child who’s been away at summer camp.

So, am I attached to my phone?  Do I take it everywhere with me? Is it on my nightstand at night?

What do you think?

Kathy I'm with Rob on this one - time to check yourself into a 30 day 12 step program for teckie addicts!!  I for one appreciate not being attached to my phone at times - especially at night. I leave mine in the family room.  Let me know how the 30 days goes!!   LOL

Kathy, IF ONLY, more spouses felt that attached to one another.

I miss the old days of the RECORD-A-CALL and the Motorola pager. I could work at my desk, listen or look as calls came in. It was far more productive.

Interruptions by those trying to sell the latest and greatest, the election poll takers, wrong numbers, tele-marjeters, fund raisers, and so on break my concentration when working with details, etc

When I am with clients, etc. I let the call go to voice mail. I look at number if possible, but I am of the conviction that the person in front of me went to far more effort for my time, and thus have priority. I developed that mentality as a mortgage loan officer, because often that applicant was on lunch hour, or had children to pickup. I miss having a loan processor available to take that ball and run. Remember thoss words: "he is with a client may I help you?" and "" I will have him call you as soon as the clients leave.". Bonus: my processors was a juggler, mind reader and diplomat extraordinaire.SERVICE IS WHAT COUNTS. Meating and exceeding expectations is key. Additionally, I try to respect you down time as well as others.
.The rules change on a short clock, but I do not intend to live each day as a fire drill.

I think it was a broker who broke me of my habit to always be tied to my phone. I couldn't stand she was always playing with her phone when I was trying to have a conversation with her regarding important matters. I thought how rude, and I don't want to be like that to others. Now I hardly give a thought to my cell phone any more. I make shopping lists with pen and paper. It's how we've been conditioned, but we don't have to continue with the conditioning.

Hi Kathy - It's amazing how much that little piece of technology has insinuated itself into our lives. And even more amazing how much work it can do - I haven't lugged a briefcase around for years - my phone has everything I need.

Kathy, I would speculate your phone is on the night stand and you take it virtually everywhere. I leave mine to charge in a second first bedroom bathroom so it does not disturb anyone else. We all have to think what did we do in the old days before thses phones?

Kathy,

At night, it stays in the office as does Ron's getting charged.  When we go to our yoga class 1and 1/2 hours lng, it sits in hidden in the car.  We rarely get wi-fi on flights, I may consider that on a transatlantic flight...nah!

I do like the solitude of being unplugged.  A

Was there life before the smart phone? I think not . . . . Our cell -phones are attached to us at the hip.

Good luck and success.

I admit to being hooked on technology Kathy. Watching that phone all day, returning email on the run. Texts, chargers all over, boy has life changed in our generation.

My phone is at my side most of the day, and right by the bed at night. If by some chance I leave the house without it, I will more than likely go back for it. I don't use it for more than phone and text and some minor checking of facebook and AR. I'm not into all the apps like you are. I still write my notes on actual paper...imgaine that! It's more about being able to make and receive calls and texts for me.

So funny, Kathy. I actually forgot my 2 iPhones at home one day when I went on a Caravan. Most humiliating. First, the list of homes we were going to was on the phone; I actually ended up riding with someone. I couldn't phone my associate to make sure MY listing was being opened for us. Worried what calls I was missing.  Couldn't check my email which I normally do every 15 minutes or so. And on and on. It was amazing how many times I reached for the non-existent phone in my pocket.

Kathy - Those feelings are a testament to just how connected to our tech devices we have become.  Yes, it's kind of like leaving a beloved child who is stepping on a bus for summer camp.

Good morning Kathy. How true and how sad that we have become so reliant on our phones and other electronics, but I guess you made it with any catastrophe.

I'm sure all of us can relate.

When I was in Europe this summer, I did not want to use my phone as much so that I could spend money shopping and not using data.  Well, I felt like an addict going through withdrawals the first day or so lol.  But by day 10, I was sleeping better.  It's nice to disconnect and I have to do that more often.  Thanks for sharing Kathy Streib - always a joy to read your adventures :).
