New Year’s Eve Traditions… What Are Yours?
Traditions are important to me… not so much that they must be kept, although I try to. Rather it’s more about discovering the traditions of others...how they came about and how others celebrate an event or holiday.
For example, I read an article on “8 Unusual New Year’s Traditions from Around the World” recently. Did you know that in some Latin American countries, the color of your underwear that you wear on New Year’s is important?
In Romania, people dress in bear costumes and go from house to house and dance to ward off evil spirits.
And in Italy, some celebrate doing something that many Stagers and Agents have often wanted to do...they throw old pots and pans and furniture out of the windows as a way of getting rid of the old and bringing in the new.
Growing up in Houston, my aunt and uncle always had a huge party with about 8 or more tables of mahjongg going on. My cousins and I ran around playing, eating and annoying the adults.
For now, the late night parties and dinners out to welcome in the new year are in the past. If I haven’t eaten dinner by 7, I lose all interest in eating.
These days we have an early dinner out with friends, or make our own lobster dinner at home. Then it’s time to kick off the shoes and watch some College Bowl games and the revelry going on in New York and other cities.
Finally, New Year’s Day, as I have done all my life, we have black eyed peas. I haven’t missed a year and this year’s can is sitting in my pantry ready to for Friday!
What’s a New Year’s tradition you keep?
