New Year’s Eve Traditions… What Are Yours?

Traditions are important to me… not so much that they must be kept, Happy 2016although I try to.  Rather it’s more about discovering the traditions of others...how they came about and how others celebrate an event or holiday.

For example, I read an article on “8 Unusual New Year’s Traditions from Around the World recently.  Did you know that in some Latin American countries, the color of your underwear that you wear on New Year’s is important?

In Romania, people dress in bear costumes and go from house to house and dance to ward off evil spirits.

And in Italy, some celebrate doing something that many Stagers happy new year 2016and Agents have often wanted to do...they throw old pots and pans and furniture out of the windows as a way of getting rid of the old and bringing in the new.

Growing up in Houston, my aunt and uncle always had a huge party with about 8 or more tables of mahjongg going on.  My cousins and I ran around playing, eating and annoying the adults.

For now, the late night parties and dinners out to welcome in the new year are in the past.  If I haven’t eaten dinner by 7, I lose all interest in eating.

These days we have an early dinner out with friends, or make our own lobster dinner at home.  Then it’s time to kick off the shoes and watch some College Bowl games and the revelry going on in New York and other cities.

Finally, New Year’s Day, as I have done all my life,  we have black eyed peas. I haven’t missed a year and this year’s can is sitting in my pantry ready to for Friday!

What’s a New Year’s tradition you keep?

Go to bed by 10 p.m.  The neighbors will let us know when it is. LOL

In my adult life, I haven't really established any traditions for New Years.  I remember when I was a kid though and we would play games as a family until it was the New Year, that was always a great deal of fun!

We generally stay home and have a lobster dinner.  Then we watch a classic movie and go to bed before midnight.

Happy New Year Kathy!

I don't keep any New Year traditions, Kathy. I can't even remember the last time I was up as late as midnight on New Year's Eve. It used to be a "kick" when I was a kid... but once I could set my own bedtime, no biggie. But as a kid I loved watching Guy Lombardo at the Waldorf on TV with my mother till midnight.

I still love to see the ball drop in NYC but I'm at home and usually turn in right after that. Nina Hollander

OK Kathy Streib my traditions: Watch the Ball Drop in
Times Square (on TV three hours early because I'm in California) and then go to bed. No yelling. No chasing evil spirits. No confetti. Maybe a little Champaign (or Martinelli's).

Bill Roberts

And yes, I will watch some of the Bowl Games.

Kathy,

Our Japanese friends cook noodles and eat them at midnight for "long" life.  We are going to enjoy dinner at home, a great bottle of wine, and save the bubbly for New Year's Day.  A

I may have a glass of the bubbly that night but I really want to be awake for the games.  The next day it's pork and sauerkraut with our friends. Ron and Alexandra Seigel

Hi Kathy - Lately Mary and I have been opting for a quiet evening at home. I'll cook something good for dinner, we'll drink too much wine, and we'll probably be sound asleep when the ball drops.

My tradition is that I hold money in both hands as the clock ticks off the old, and ticks in the new. Entering the New Year with coins, dollar bills (money) in both hands ensures the new year will end with money and it won't be lost throughout the year.  I've been doing this since I was 19-years old, a tradition learned from my Panamanian husband (first husband -- whom I didn't hold in my hands at the passing of the year . . . since he's long gone now.)  LOL  Happy New Year

It's just another day in our home.  Years ago we were going to dinner on New Year's Eve and got hit by a driver who was undocumented, had a suspended license and no insurance.  It was awful.  Did I mention my husband's car at the time was brand new?  Never tried dinner out on New Year's Eve since.

Kathy my families New Year tradition is not as exciting or as colorful as those you mentioned above.  Every New Year we have a lobster dinner.  It may not be exciting or colorful, but it sure is tasty :)

I love lobster George Souto We're not having it this year but maybe another time.  And...Maine lobster, not Florida.

Good morning Kathy. Staying at our beach house starting later today, always wonderful to be on the ocean, it doesn't matter the temperature. A late dinner with friends until the midnight hour.

Best wishes for the New Year to you and yours.

Kathy, I can't say I have any specific traditions.  I'm almost NEVER at a party.  I sometimes watch the ball drop on TV (but probably only because I flipped over from another channel just moments before), and odds are about 50/50 that I'll already be asleep (either in bed or from unintentionally catching some zzzzs on the couch.  Bill

Oh, and I may start another tradition.  There's a Viet Namese deli that offers Pho -- it's name is Pho King Good, btw.  LOL  Anyway, they have a delightful sweetened rice dice with black-eyed peas, served with coconut milk poured on the top.  I've read that black-eyed peas are eaten New Year's eve and New Year's day in the south for good luck.  I actually learned about this from reading tradition posts here on the Rain.
