4 Easy Tips to Master the Art of Networking

So what's all the hype about networking to grow your business? Many folks I know are 'shy' about reaching out and learning how to network.  And that group includes even the more experienced business people that I know. And then some folks are just born networkers - or so it appears. Most likely that isn't the case - this group was taught the how's and whys of networking - and followed that advice until they became comfortable in meeting new people and reaching out to new people - on purpose. If you put the time into building those connections, your efforts will definitely be rewarded. Here are 4 tips  to to Master the Art of Networking that you probably have heard....but the real question is...have you actually done them or just thought about them?

Tip #1 Have a goal in mind

Are you there to gain new prospects, clients or referrals? Know what type of connections you're looking for.  And then, all you need to do is find a couple of folks at each networking meeting and start a meaningful conversation. Over time you're network will grow and you'll actually look forward to going to meetings - with a goal in mind.

Tip #2 Be articulate, clear and genuine

When you're speaking with someone, impress them by asking questions about their business and then LISTEN to their answers. And for  Pete's sake don't be talking only about YOU!  There is nothing more annoying then folks who are all 'about them' and could care less about getting to know you.

Tip #3 Look and act professional

This is an obvious one, but don't forget this. Bring your business cards, and iron your clothes and leave your flip flops at home unless it's a beach network mixer like in the photo above! Don't be fooled: people always judge a book by its cover. And one more thing - dress appropriately for your profession.

Tip #4 Follow through - yes - Follow through

After you've met someone and had an interesting conversation and exchanged  business cards, always remember to contact them and follow up in a timely manner. Call them, e-mail them.... just contact them and let them know you valued your conversation! Invite them to coffee or lunch and discover how you can help each other 'grow' your business. You'd be surprised how many people forget this one VERY HUGE network growing step.

So there you go - 4  Easy Tips to Master the Art of Networking! Make a plan to get over whatever is holding you back from growing your connections, network and business. Just Do It!

Have a goal in mind for networking is super important, and easy to neglect. For follow-up I've been using BombBomb videos lately. (I should write a blog post about that, but likely not this week.)

Anna, this is a great list of tips for effective networking.

I think most people I see fail in #'s 1 and 2.

I often wonder why some people go to a networking event, as they seem to stay to themselves or huddle with people they already know well.

#2 is a BIG tip. People want to spend time with those who care about them.

Hi John Wiley you brought up one of my pet peeves.  Why on earth go to a network event and hang around people you know?  I saw that last week and thought......what is the point of even going?

Hi Luke Acree cutting a good figure?  Not sure I understand how that fits into networking. I don't cut the figure I did at a younger age by a long shot but that has nothing to do with networking in my world.  To the younger set - probably it does - I do remember at least!!

Anna, thank you for reminding us about the fundamentals of networking!

As a Honolulu Realtor, flip-flops (or what we call slippers over here) are business appropriate foot wear, as long as they are in good shape and I have to admit that my feet don't like it when they are trapped inside a pair of shoes...

Aloha!

Monique Ting I hear you - here in Phoenix I rarely wear 'real' shoes with toes!

Providing the integrity and service you deserve.

These are all basic but very good tips. I suspect #4 is the one that's neglected the most. I confess I've missed on that a few times. Need to be more consistent. Great post.

Just about everyone you meet can be considered a networking opportunity.  Totally agree on the 'dress professional'--at least neat and put together. That makes an impression.

There are networking opportunities everywhere, you can network if there are more than 2 people. I do better in small groups, have to learn to like it in bigger groups.

Excellent advice Anna Banana Kruchten,CRS,CRB,GRI and I particularly like the "leave the flip flops at home" advice. Because we can dress casually I have to remind myself to wear the right shoes and clothes:) Thank you for the tips and have a great weekend!

Anna Banana Kruchten,CRS,CRB,GRI - I love your tips. If you ever had time on your hands, it would be fun to teach Networking to the youngsters at school. They could sure benefit by it all and you'd give them reason to discover more about other people than to be self-centered.

Marketing has so many facets.  Direct mail, social media, online advertsings, writing a book ... the list goes on.  And there are blogs, classes, clubs there to teach how.  But, likely the face to face is the most successful and the least taught.  Good rules --- Good post!

You never know where the next business connection could take your career. I find it necessary to attend networking events when I can, that are great for creating relationships, making new friends, share ideas, or just having a good time reconnecting with an old friend.
