Christmas...The Day After…Thoughts

And so the diet and fasting begin!  Not really because I know that everyone here has been good and didn’t overindulge.

Today is also National Thank You Note Day. Quite appropriate for the day after Christmas. I can remember my mother sitting with me after the holidays to make sure that I’d written a “Thank you” note to everyone for their gift.

I wonder if parents still do this?

christmas 2017

When I was growing up a sale was a big thing. I have memories of going into downtown Houston with my mother and aunt for the after Christmas sale on cards, ribbon and wrapping paper. Everything was 50% off and it’s when everyone stocked up for the next year.

It seems that now things are on sale all of the time, either in an actual brick and mortar store or up in Cyberville.

The day after was also the time when you headed to the stores to return, exchange, or get another size for whatever gift you received.

Now with Gift Cards… no problem!  I suppose there is something to be said for progress.

What I’ve learned as the years go by is that while traditions are to be treasured, things, people, and circumstances change.  People move away or are no longer with us. Families expand and time must be carved out to make room and time to include everyone.

The trick is to find new ways to celebrate the holiday.

Create new holiday traditions whenever you can.  Build on the old ones, do away with those that no longer serve a purpose or suit your needs.

The important thing is not to dwell on what was but look forward to what can be.

No returns today. I am focused on tomorrow...my annual physical exam.  Why did I schedule a check up in the middle of holidays?

Kathy, now is not the time to bring up diets.

There are leftover deserts that must be eaten. There is fudge and candy all around.

There is still food to eat and that means I do not have time to go fight the crowds in the stores.

There is still New Years Eve to celebrate and that means more food.

But, for the New Year, I am determined to join the crowds at the gym for 3 weeks straight and I will have done my duty for the year.

Happy New Year.

The best laid plans. We had made cioppino and a feast for 12. Had all sorts of traditions and games to play and enjoy. Flu and a snow/ freezing rain mix put a real damper on all of our plans. The only guests who were able to make it spend hours on the road - to and from. There were just six of us at the table including my parents. Everyone else was sick, or didn't want to brave the icy roads. It was a very different celebration - but we adjusted our plans and expectations quickly and enjoyed  it anyway. :)

One of my favorite little traditions changed this year.

Every year (fairly recent tradition since Jack and Zack are only 8 yrs. old) I take a pic with the grands. Until this year I gave them coordinated pj's to wear for the pic. For various reasons we dropped the pj part this year.

Sad at first but at least I still get to have the picture.

Kathy I was good so far during the holidays so my weight is about the same.

By the way my wife also does the shopping after Christmas for deals on cards, and wrapping paper.

Hi Kathy:  I was thinking about this myself, how different Christmas is for me now than it was. I used to throw a huge Christmas Eve party for all of my friends and family, with a big tree, tons of food and drinks and presents. Then family started dying off, friends moved away, I moved out of state, and it seemed like too much work. I tried a small 4-foot tree for a few years but the cats still attacked the ornaments, and I said what the heck, I should go to the South Pacific and be done with all of this, LOL. Never regretted that idea.

For me it has been "National Face Plant Day."  I am thoroughly exhausted because of the 4 days of feasting and family.  I just woke up from a 2 hour nap after hitting my pillow face first, and probably doing some drooling out of the corner of my mouth.

George Souto I'm thinking of finding a replacement for the small table top tree we have.  May have to head to the stores.

This Christmas was the start of a new normal for us.  A Christmas dinner for our wayward friends without families to celebrate with and no gifts except those we gave Mom.  (It's her birthday.)

No stress.  Lots of fun.
