The Great American Cleanup in Delray Beach

So many are beginning their Spring cleaning this month so what better place to start than our own planet and where we live.

great american clean up

In its 20th year, the Great American Cleanup recognizes that it is each individual's responsibility to keep our planet clean, and that begins at the grass roots.

Communities are encouraged to initiate programs that fit their local needs.

Keep America Beautiful and its volunteers have much more than clean up beaches. They've removed litter and garbage from our roadways, highways, and waterways; planted trees and gardens; recycled cars, glass, cans, and paper to help minimize our already large footprint; helped to keep parks and nature trails clean for all of us; and much more.

If you live in Palm Beach County, there are other opportunities to volunteer here.

If you'd like to volunteer in your community, you can enter your zip code here.

I just don't understand why some people think it's ok to leave their trash for someone else to clean-up!  If everyone did a little, we could accomplish a lot.

I'm sure that the  most frequently found item on beach clean up day is cigarette butts.  Always digsuts me to see those tossed about, but especially on a beach.

Good morning,  Kathy. I agree that we should start "cleaning" at "home". If we have a regular routine, we will have a lot less to do.

Kathy,

I need to some great clean up here at home, and on my desk.  Have not had an opportunity to check out the beach.  I am sure there is debris from the storms that still need to be picked up.  A

Barbara Todaro I'm shivering just hearing of your temperatures. Hope you get that warm and sunny weather you want soon.

Sally K. & David L. Hanson we try to pick up trash when we're walking in the morning at the beach but often, there's just too much of it.

Marco Giancola you're a good person!!! I know what you mean...when Larry and I are on our walk, we can't believe what people will leave on the beach. There's no excuse because there are plenty of cans around for disposal!

Myrl Jeffcoat I'm checking out the link later. We've found pizza boxes and empty bottles on the beach. Why in the world can't they throw them away.

Wayne Martin isn't it a shame how some people will thow their trash on the streets. Who do they think will pick it up?

Donald Urschalitz that is such a good organization!  I wonder if they have those in other areas?

This was started over 20 years ago by local citizens to keep our beaches clean since we have areas that dogs are allowed and they wanted to be sure the beaches would remain clean. They are called Friends of Jupiter Beach. They still turn out a hundred people a month. Civic pride is alive.

Gabe Sanders you are so funny! And thank you for helping out at the Stuart Causeway.

Carol Williams when I see someone throw trash out of their car, I wish I could give them a little zap on their hand!

Brian England LOL I usually take my photos in the early mornings before the hoards of people hit the beaches.

Sheri Sperry - MCNE® I wish. Perhaps these people were never taught by their parents to pick up after themselves.

Ron and Alexandra Seigel we have a big tractor that goes along the beach every morning and rakes up the trash. Thank goodness.

Nick & Trudy Vandekar, 610-203-4543 it's amazing how good we can feel when we take the focus off of us and focus on others.

This is a fantastic activity to start the spring off right.  I hope other areas take this idea and use it to clean up their towns.
