Who needs Community Guidelines on Active Rain?
Having been on this platform for over ten years, I admitted to everyone in 2014, on the first Challenge when we were asked to write about the “Community Guidelines” that it was the first time I read it. Since, then I have participated in the Challenge sponsored by our friend Lynn B. Friedman and needless to say not much has changed in my position about the Guidelines.
As far as I am concerned: I am not a fan of being micro managed, nor operating in a very restrictive environment. I guess it was my upbringing, my father was a disciplinarian, I lived the first ten years of my life in a Communist Country with many restrictive rules.
Then I experienced freedom living in Austria and then ultimately in the United States when we legally immigrated here. My first year of college was in Ypsilanti, Michigan where there was extreme freedom, keep in mind this was in 1972/1973-time frame😊! Which was followed by an equally restrictive time attending one of the most restrictive schools in the country, USMA, that is at West Point, NY.
With that said, when I left the US Army, I wanted nothing to do with rules and regulations. As it turned out I had to adjust my thinking, because to move ahead in Corporate America you need to follow rules as well.
Then when I got on this platform the Community Guidelines were very short and to the point use “common sense” was the message. As the ownerships changed, I noticed that the Community Guidelines got longer and longer. It must have come from the Corporate Mentality or should I say Corporate Management Style.
Then to boot, the mentality of legally protecting the management and ownership from liability. I get it the Fair Housing Laws need to be spelled out to navigate from lawsuits....
As far as I am concerned ‘the meat and potatoes’ of the Guidelines consist of : Don’t try to look for loopholes: instead, take them to heart and respect the spirit on which they were created.
My take is the Community Guidelines are only as good as the enforcement of the rules. If no one is enforcing the rules, they are meaningless. The violators will figure out, that no one is watching and will try to get away with violating the rules.
All in all, reviewing the Community Guidelines nothing has changed my point of view in the past five years. It is still about shortening it “treat others as you would like to be treated by others”.
