How Important is a Sales Background to Real Estate?

By
Real Estate Agent with Elizabeth Anne Weintraub, Broker DRE #00697006

When I see people in sales professions working so hard to make a few sales that probably pay pittances, I can't help but wonder why they aren't in real estate. Maybe that's why, though. Because they are not confident enough in their own abilities to make it in a 100%-based commisson world. Maybe that's why some other agents prefer to join a discount brokerage where they still make peanuts but receive a salary.

It's a bit scary to work on your own without a safety net, basing your success on your own abilities. By the way, it was Chris Ann Cleland who inspired me to explore this topic in my own life. You can read more in my personal blog today at this link: How a Sales Background Helps Real Estate Agents.

Afternoon Elizabeth.

My dad owned his own company and traveled 27 states.  During the summer months I would go with him.  I learned how he did it.  That kind of experience has served me well.

Hi Elizabeth... great picture. I've been quite successful in real estate without a sales background... but I had a great background in negotiations, finance, and communciation. And I entered this profession precisely to be entrepreurial and because I'd been the victim of very bad brokering.... I found agents did not listen. I knew I could run rings around most of them if I just listened to clients.

I think you are onto something, Elizabeth.  When I was a kid, I belonged to Camp Fire Girls.  We sold candy, and other products.  And, I remember using a loom with loops to make potholders.  I also collected up mistletoe out of my aunt's tree during the holidays.  I'd tie sprigs of it together with ribbon.  I sold the potholders and the mistletoe in front of the post office all during the holidays.  I think that kind of experience as a kid helps.  We gotta support the kids and their lemonade stands.  They may be the Realtors of tomorrow!

I was a very reluctant sales person in the early years.  But I kept getting those jobs because sales is ingrained in me.   I'm a natural and have learned that sales skills are always in demand and help me to get where I am in real estate today.  We aren't door openers.  We're salespeople.

James Dray Learning from family when you're young is a great way to be introduced to sales. My parents had no sales occupations and would not understand the art of nuance if you hit them over the head with a sledgehammer.

Nina Hollander to understand negotiations is to understand sales, though.

You were a Camp Fire girl, Myrl Jeffcoat ?  I did not know that. My mother tried to enroll me in Future Homemakers of America (FHA)!! Can you believe it? I went to one meeting and said F this. Not going back.

Helping people is a key to sales success...it's that service motif...and real estate is a natural fit.

No doubt, Elizabeth... my point was that I brought negotiating skills to the table without ever having sold anything retail or wholesale. Then again, one might argue that I "sold" everyday in my corporate jobs getting people to do what they needed to do, getting buy-ins from Boards of Directors for certain strategies, etc.

Hi Elizabeth- my background was in sales as well. After grad school I had no idea what I wanted to do so I worked as a placement consultant (I placed office support staff) for many years and loved it. It was selling...selling myself and what my company had to offer. Someone may know all of the legal real estate terms and contracts and know all about MLS but you have to be able to sell. You sell yourself and your expertise , then you go out and sell that house!

Elizabeth, I definitely had no sales experience when starting in real estate.  I have always considered this business as customer service based.

Kathy Streib Nina Hollander Li Read  I agree. Some agents do not realize they are selling every single day. They are selling their services and themselves to their clients, they are selling their clients' objectives to the other side and they are selling other agents on working with them. There is a reason it is called real estate sales, and agents who have flexed those muscles in the past have an advantage.

From my earliest days on my own and that was at age 19 in Honolulu, every job I ever had was in "public relations". No one had a clue what that was but that's the job title I always got. When I look back, my bosses saw a self starter whom they could not tie to a desk doing boring things day after day. Hey, I call what I did "sales". It really didn't matter what the product was as long as I believed in it. For the last 13 years it's been "real estate" and I have a string of happy clients, many of them still friends.
