This Week...Snakes, Summer, and School’s Out!

After posting a photo of what we saw on a recent walk at Kickerillo-Mischer Preserve, I have a few friends and family members who have declined our invitations to join us on our morning walks.

snakes

Summer afternoon, summer afternoon; to me, those have always been the two most beautiful words in the English language. Henry James

It’s easy to see why!  I love being out in nature but I have to draw the line at snakes. It may have resulted from the time my Brownie troop when camping and we saw 6 snakes that weekend. Think about how loud a group of 11-year-old girls can scream!

Long stormy spring-time, wet contentious April, winter chilling the lap of very May; but at length, the season of summer does come. Thomas Carlyle

The Senior Scouts nearby would run over so they could kill the snake, skin it and put the skin on their cowboy hats. (keep in mind, I grew up in Houston!)

Summer may not officially be here but it is hot!  No complaints here, though, because I do remember what it was like here in January.

When all else fails, take a vacation. Betty Williams

And finally, for most of our area school is out. It’s not like it was when I was a wee one...3 months of freedom from school, sleeping late and waiting for the sweet sounds of the ice cream man driving through your neighborhood.

Happiness consists of living each day as if it were the first day of your honeymoon and the last day of your vacation.  Leo Tolstoy

Have a snake-free weekend!

The mention of snakes has that effect on people.  I know people that won't hike for fear of running into a snake, even though it is quite rare.

Good morning, Kathy Streib LOL...not too long ago, your title would have been Gators, Summer and School's Out.... I was always the only one who would pick up a snake....  maybe that's why I blended in so well with the real estate business from day 1... I can handle any snake!!

I guess snakes tend to scare most of us. As much as we love nature, we wouldn't want to find one of these on our path. Although, I'd still go for walks with you... ;) They don't stop me from going places.Enjoyed the snippets of thoughts from you - and the photos.

Hello Kathy,  Not a fan of snakes since I was being bit by a rattle snake while rock climbing.  Her the rattle and just mov my hand in time.

While the snakes sound a little frightening, I watched a news segment this morning that reported a homeowner in Clearwater, Florida had an 11 foot aligator in her kitchen.

Grant Schneider Had I stayed in Girl Scouts, I still don't think I would have come close to killing and skinning a snake.

Donald Urschalitz I agree. For me I think of kids playing and ice cream cones.

Michael Jacobs sounds like an ideal summer to me.

Wayne Martin oh yes, and I consider myself a city girl so no snakes for me either.

Ron and Alexandra Seigel you're braver than I am. I will get as far away as I can from snakes.

Brian England my walking now is on a paved path. I may consider something off trail when it's colder.

Barbara Todaro you'll pick up a snake but don't like gators!!!???

Sharon Lee I hope that your summer is totally snake free and full of sunshine.

Morning Kathy.

With my thoughts about snakes, it would only take one time to see one.  I would never walk through that area again

I don't remember the last time I saw a snake.  I would like to keep it that way.

Our kids still have a couple of weeks left of school...looking forward to spending more time with the grands when they get out.
