Sally K. & David L. Hanson That's good! We don't live close enough to anyone shooting fireworks for my dogs to be bothered, but a big thunder boomer or a gunshot will send Katie and Puppy running to me for protection.
Mac does get worried...and sadly there are lots of illegal big booms when you live in the country. Independence is often celebrated by those who love their Independence, if you get my drift. Rules? Heck no, they don't apply to moi. ???

Debb Janes EcoBroker and Bernie Stea JD We live in the country and have neighbors who will be shooting fireworks, but they're a mile away and don't use the really, really loud ones that would echo through the valley. From here it will just sound like a "whump." Not near as loud as when someone is target practicing.
Fortuntely, our dogs run for the house if they're frightened - and we never leave them outside if we're not here to open that door.
Marte - wise to remind everyone. That true. The shelters do fill up now.

Absolutely, our furry friends need special attention and protection on the 4th. Thanks Marte for thinking of them.

Grant Schneider When you work in rescue, your heart breaks - wondering what has become of those poor frightened critters.
Kris Collis I always think of the critters. How can I not, when they rule my life?
Welcome to the rain - and thanks for stopping by my blog!
Great post, Marte. It always amazes me how careless people are with their fur-babies when it comes to holiday celebrations.

HI Marte Cliff - all good points to remember if you live in an area where the 4th is celebrated with fireworks. We do not celebrate with fireworks in Sedona. The most we have done is have a laser light show.

Hi Marte,
We had a huge thunderstorm here the other day and I'm hearing lots of stories of lost dogs.
This is a very important reminder, Marte. I live very close to the park where the community fireworks display is performed each year. I have to make provisions to keep them comfortable.
Nina Hollander They just aren't thinking. They enjoy the noise and the light and forget that it might be terrifying to their pets.
Sheri Sperry - MCNE® I wonder why that is?
Carol Williams I'll never forget an old dog who ran off when his people left him outside and a big storm came in. One of my neighbors found him a few miles from home, plodding down the highway. He picked him up and brought him to me - at that time we had no shelter, so I asked if he could foster the dog. He said yes, but then the dog wandered off to another neighbor.
A couple of days later a VERY pregnant young woman came in lookig for her dog. I called my neighbor, who told me he no longer had him, but referred me to another neighbor. Meanwhile, the young woman was crying buckets of tears & I worried that she would go into labor right there.
The other neighbor didn't want a dog around, so they had called a friend who came and got him. And yes - we finally did get that old dog back to his family.
I told her to leave him inside in the future...

Mine just sleeps it off. Or sometimes if woken up by the kids, watches it with us. But for others, we really need to let the pets in. It's not the same for all just because it worked for you.
Leif Price That is so true. All dogs or cats are not the same. We should never assume, when we get a new pet, that he or she will react the same way our others do.
