World Food Day is October 16…

The thought of anyone, let alone a child, going hungry puts a lump in world food daymy throat and ache in my heart.

This cannot be...when we live in communities where we always have leftovers and our question is not if we have food to feed our family but shall we order in or cook.

If you are in the Houston area, here are two organizations where you can help or receive assistance. For a larger list, please see Houston TX Free Food Resources.

Houston Food Bank

713-223-3700

This is the largest food bank in scope as well as size in the U.S. They distribute food through a network of 1500 partners in 18 southeast Texas counties.

There is an on-site catering and conference center that help support the Food Bank.

There is a community kitchen, Backpack Buddy program, the Portwall Pantry, a school market, and much more.

Bethel’s Heavenly Hands

Houston, TX 77035

What you can do…

-Volunteer at your area food distribution center.

-Donate money if you can.

-When you make a trip to your grocery store or order Curb Side pick up, add some non-perishable food items. You can donate these to your local food bank or church food drive.

You can learn more about World Food Day here.

Kathy, it is heartbreaking to know many children go without food, and hope you have many donate.

Kathy,

All of our markets contribute to the food bank weekly and some twice a week.  There is a concerted effort to feed people in our town.  It is crazy that we have hunger in the US.  A

I know how much food is wasted every year in our country. Wouldn't it be wonderful if that practice stopped, and more people could benefit? I too just can't fathom how sad it is to know some people are hungry right now. :(

Hi Kathy Streib

Hunger is a worldwide challenge but we can make a difference in our local communities. ....And dare I say, that is where it counts! Thank you for putting attention on this worthy cause.

Hi Kathy I've been hearing this past week or so that food banks are in dire need of more food. So many families out of work, kids at home.  The schools have been offering meals for kids since last spring whether school is open or not. We all need to up the ante and help out even more this year. Thank you for reminding us just how big a difference it will make.

Hi Nina Hollander I've read your posts!!!!!  Your area does a good job with food drives.

Kat Palmiotti they can and it's not just during the holidays.

Joan Cox It is unthinkable that there is hunger, and not just here but worldwide.

Ron and Alexandra Seigel and not just for food but nutritional food. When I walk through Trader Joes or Whole Foods I cannot imagine how families can afford organic produce or some of the other items.

Sharon Lee I agree. How can a child study or learn if they're hungry?

Roy Kelley we can all do something even if it's a small donation at the market each week.

Rocky Dickerson it does mine as well. When I see our family and all of the children and adults healthy and fed, it makes me want to give more.

Debb Janes EcoBroker and Bernie Stea JD I don't know if this is still a practice, but many years ago in Houston, the restaurants collected food that was not used that night and took it to food kitchens. I agree...we waste so much.

Will Hamm that is so sad. I hope people will give where they can.

This is a good website to find help in any area. They list all types of food pantries and soup kitchens. Just choose your state and then city. They seem to have a lot of choices. If you know of one and don't see it listed there is a place to add it.

www.foodpantries.org

I agree, no one should ever go hungry.
