Ask An Ambassador: Is ActiveRain Relevant To Consumers?

By
Real Estate Agent with Transaction Alliance 513.520.5305 www.LizTour.com SAL.2002007747

Once upon a time long long ago (at least by Internet standards) you could write just about anything and find yourself ranked highly.

Was ActiveRain the king of SEO back in the day?

Or maybe a mix of knowing what was going on, teaching the lessons and also not having the same competition?

Flash forward to today and there's competition, and plenty of it.

Big portals.  Big brokerages.  And that's just for starters.

Now mix in agent websites, either provided by their brokerage or the agent's own Wordpress or similar site.  It's really not that costly (relatively speaking) to enter the arena.

So is ActiveRain still relevant to the consumer?  Is it still a valid blogging tool to gain business?

The answers?  In my opinion, maybe to the first and yes to the second.

Do I think a typical consumer has ever even HEARD of ActiveRain, much less come here to search for real estate information AS A STARTING POINT?

I'd put Mattress Mack betting on the Superbowl kind of money on that being a big NO.

They're probably NOT coming to the site and going to the Feature page.

They're certainly not heading to the Leaderboard to find out who has five million points.

Frankly I don't think the platform is easily searchable for the average consumer to come here and find a specific result that has local meaning for them.

So you might think all this means ActiveRain is a total waste of time to gain consumer attention, right?

But here's the thing.  I KNOW consumers do find our content on ActiveRain, but it's not because they started here, but they did finish here.

Write the right content and you as a Rainmaker can still find yourself on page 1 of the search results.

Go short tail and the big portals and brokerages will bury you deep in the results.

Zillow, R.com and others spend millions and millions making sure they're top of mind when it comes to consumers and general home searching.  I'm not going to match their $$$ for Cincinnati homes for sale, and I don't have the time to develop the extensive content (even if I could figure out and keep up with the latest Google recipe) to beat them.

But what I can do using ActiveRain is continue carving out small pieces of the pie, long tail, unique, relevant, evergreen style.

I know consumers are interested in new construction patio homes, condos on Landen Lake, golf course condos, etc.

If I take the time to write informative posts that are VERY specific to what the consumer needs, the calls will come.

I know firsthand which posts have performed well and led to closing table meetings.  Posts about specific subdivisions, new construction projects, etc.

Those posts are how we make ActiveRain relevant to the consumer.

I know I've heard the "ActiveRain doesn't have the same SEO as it used to" many times.  But I think the playing field has changed so much over the last decade that it's tough for any individual site to stay top rank unless they've got serious $$$ to pour into the effort.  Going niche has been the key for us.

Hello Bill (and Liz too) - I see your post as an interesting look at how the public finds all sorts of things online (and specifically during that process may become aware of ActiveRain).  Seeing (hearing) how contacts we encounter sometimes transform into connections continues to fascinate me.

There is a certain genius to the madness of the whole thing.  That's for sure.

I remember years ago one member saying her mother thought her points were dollars earned :)  The public has no reason to understand the points system, the Leaderboard, or give a rip about any of that stuff that's particular to the AR members.  They just want good information.

I think it is relevant and I hope with the changes being instituted (hopefully) that it will become even more relevant in the future.

I'm not sure how much Ben and company can do for the SEO aspect.  I know the bots crawl our content, so as long as we as individuals produce relevant content, I think the rest will take care of itself.

I know I'm not going to beat the 800 pound gorillas on their own playing field, but there's plenty to be done in places where they don't play.

Hi Bill,
I think AR is relevant but maybe not in the way many members think. For me and many others, it's about member-to-member relationships. For others, like you, the blogging itself has paid dividends.  The thing is we never really know where our business is going to come so we don't put all our eggs in one basket.  We nurture several baskets.

For agent to agent or other professional relationships, I'd definitely consider AR the place to be.  I believe that the blog posting we've done here has increased our digital presence and helped us received referrals from non-AR members.  There's much to be gained by doing here, depending on how one approaches the site.

Liz and Bill Spear - Anytime I tell people I'm a Blogger they want to know what's the name of my Blog? When I say it's on ActiveRain, they don't make the connection between real estate and what I (and other members) have to offer. When I tell it's a platform for real estate agents they seem to lose interest and forget. I wonder if the name were changed to REALTORS ACTIVERAIN would have helped?

Feb 15, 2022 09:13 AM
Liz and Bill Spear

I'm sure the name made sense to the founders for connecting real estate agents (e.g. Rainmaking), but the title by itself would give no indication to a consumer that the site has anything to do with real estate.

Excellent post, Bill Liz and Bill Spear - consumers may not know about ActiveRain but they will find high-ranking content that originated here. I know I have a few evergreen posts I published here and from time to time I do get calls from those posts.

The engagement here with other professionals is what the site is all about for me.

I have certain posts that just keep generating contacts.  Why they outdo some of the other similar posts I can't answer, but they work and I'm happy to take the results.

Excellent as always. Another interesting thing - if you're in an area with less online competition, if you write a lot, you'll keep popping up. I had done some posts about subdivisions in my area when I first got here because I couldn't find information about the subdivisions on line. Not only are there very few agents writing about subdivisions (maybe none?) here but most of the subdivisions themselves don't have a web page. So I do get found. It's a very interesting thing.

Feb 15, 2022 12:23 PM
Liz and Bill Spear

I've seen somewhat similar here, agents don't take the trouble to go down to the subdivision level.  One local agent does pound subdivisions hard, but provides zero information other than just the active listings.  It seems to work for him despite the absence of additional information.

I agree and I also agree.  A well written , informative blog with a long tail will catch the buyer that is looking in that area and none of the bigs care to chase that part of the pie

Feb 15, 2022 03:17 PM
Liz and Bill Spear

I think that is the edge for the individual agent.  I don't know about your MLS, but in mine you could TRY to search by MLS, but it's a case of Garbage In, Garbage Out.  No consistent way of entry and a subdivision might have 2 or 3 different ways of being entered.  How are the bigs supposed to provide data for that?  On the other hand a local agent that knows what streets belong where?  We can do that!

We each choose what works for us for the style of content we want to produce.  For me, it still works and even if I hadn't been on a free account for years, I'd not have concerns with contributing to the company coffers.

Thanks for this post. It may have been sparked by my question about how consumers perceive AR and associated agent rankings. I agree it's a great place to network with other agents. I will also be upgrading my membership so I look forward to adding AR to my online presence. The site definitely has trust with Google.  According to Alexa Rank, it's the 8,508th most populare site in the US which is significant.

The combination of knowing our particular markets and providing specific and relevant content for that market can be a winner here. And AR is still a terrific place for learning, sharing, building relationships and creating a powerful network.

I think the SEO from our Wordpress site IDX pages outperforms AR for us at this point, but all the other aspects of AR still work great for us.

There's always plenty to go around, but you are so correct, we have to find the route to the niche buyers who are out there waiting to connect with us. And I like Jeff's comment too...AR is a good place for friendship, support, and inspiration. D

For us AR serves two primary purposes, the connect to the consumer version and of course the professional/relationship side for the other.

Hi Bill- all of what you said is so true. When people express concern about where they stand on the leaderboard, I scratch my head. BTW- we love Mattress Mack in Houston and don't feel too bad about his 9.5 million SuperBowl bet loss. He sold $20 million worth of furniture that was tied into the game.  Gotta love him.

He's got the money to play and it's essentially free PR for him!
And from firsthand experience, being #1 in Ohio on the Leaderboard has not done a thing for our business. The content we published to get there is what matters.
