I wish I could say it isn't true, but I find funny and/or embarrassing typos in listings on the MLS on a pretty regular basis.  Here are a few of the ones I've seen:
  • a sinking living room (vs. sunken)
  • walking closet (where is it walking to?)
  • wreck room (rec. room)
  • stainless steal appliances
  • contract fell threw
  • hardware floors (hardwood floors)
  • remolded bathrooms (yikes!)
  • two full bedrooms (as opposed to what?...half bedrooms?)
  • No Job Road (vs. No. Jog Road... had to be a joke!)

Unfortunately, even spell-checkers don't catch many typos!  This is just part of the reason why it's so important to proofread your listings.  Sellers have the right to and should request to see a copy of the full listing data sheet from the MLS from their agent if the brokerage company doesn't automatically send one out shortly after listing the property.  Although typos can be embarrasing, incorrect information can be costly to the seller if not caught early on.  Anyone have examples of funny or embarrassing typos you've come across in listings?

Leanne,

Here in the Pacific Northwest where we get alot of rain and moisture, "re-molded" bathrooms are actually quite common.

Fun post. Thanks!

I have seen advertisements for "3 beds and 2 baths" making me wonder if a boarding house menu was being offered.

Funny!

I detest typos. There was an ad in a magazine here for "large deck", except it said "large dick". We really need to proof read our copy.

Thanks for the laugh, I always laugh at typos and hope not to make the same mistakes - how about cigarrete arches instead of "Ziggurat" - I still laugh out loud at that one.

"PRICED TO SELL!!!" as opposed to what??  Priced to not sell?  priced to keep?

Leanne, we have a very nice, very professional elderly Realtor® in my area from another country originally; and he does his MLS write ups like he talks - he is a one man show at his Company too, so I don't know if he gets anything proofread. But he leaves out letters and adds them in; and he calls rooms by funny names; we hang his posts up in the office. It's hard to get mad at him because he does a good job on contract work, but boy his mls listings are hard to read!  As soon as I hit send I remembered one: "upstairs bathroom no go"  ????? So what it really means, I found out, is that it needs work!  :-)

Now, see... here is a perfect example of why we should proofread our listings:

...check out the price ($3/year - for rent) for a 5 BR / 4 BA home!

WHAT A BARGAIN!!!  Hey... maybe someone will rent it for $3/year and use it for storage space!

Ines - how do you like this one?  Want to rent it?  LOL!!!!!

LOLOL  Now, isn't it true that once it appears in MLS if someone makes an offer on it it has to stand? I've never seen anything THAT drastic though!

That's the theory, Carole, but in reality I don't think they'd be held to it... especially when we're talking about something that was clearly due to a lack of proofreading on behalf of the agent and/or person who entered the listing into the MLS.  At the bottom of all our MLS print-outs there is a line that reads "Information is believed accurate but is not warranted."

Leanne,

Thanks for laugh.  It's amazing that agents don't double check there listings.  Don't they know they may be auditioning for new listings with their current listings.

In my primary MLS we are broker load. The AE reviews the listings before taking them from "temp" to "active." She usually catches most mistakes, but last week she missed this one by a seasoned agent:

"Hoe needs lots of work."

One agent in our office misread the listing agents handwriting.

She entered an "ELK kitchen"

EatInKitchen was the actual description.

Yes, some are very funny--I happen to be a bit Dyslexic--and the word that gives me the most problme is grate/great! Do you have any advise advice for someone like me!

Ok! problem gives me a problem lol

It's a good thing that to be a grate Realotr you don't have to be a grate speller!  But I usally do catch the errors!

My pet peeve is more with unethical agents than with bad spellers!  But you do make a good point!

Hey Leanne,

This happens to be a great way to market. I haven't personally done this myself. But, It's known to grab attention and you'd be surprised who would call you to correct you, they could become your client. So mostly likely these were intentional. Let's hope so anyway....LOL
