Wordless Wednesday…Synchronized Swimming (quack quack)

We’ve been walking at Meyer Park on Sundays for a change of pace and if we time it right we’ll hear the church carillon.  During the holidays we were treated to Christmas carols.

This past Sunday we stopped by a small pond near the path and caught this act…

Wordless Wednesday…Never Too Old

Last Sunday Larry and I got to spend time with Mini-Me.  She is such a pleasure to be around. Mini-Me is thoughtful and sensitive but also does not mince words.

She was trying to teach me how to pronounce the name she calls her great-grandmother in Spanish. Since she is part Hispanic, she knows how to count in Spanish and has learned phrases from her aunt.

Even though I used to run a German language lab in college and thought I had a good ear for language, apparently I was a failure.

I’m still trying, though.

Wordless Wednesday…Throwing in the Hat

With a dismal record of 3 wins and 13 losses, the Texans have once again disappointed the city.

And, in a rare win on Sunday against the Colts, they also gave up their chance at the #1 Draft Pick…who could be Alabama’s quarterback,  Bryce Young.
The fire hydrant we saw this week just about sums it up.

Wordless Wednesday…Covering Up The Texas Way

Texans, especially those of us in South Texas are not accustomed to hard freezes but we do have them.  Just before Christmas, we had one of those but even colder…in the teens.

The first thing everyone tells you is to protect your pipes!  So we bring out our foam faucet covers!

But if you’re in Texas and those covers become hard to find…we improvise with a Whataburger cup!!!

If you’re not familiar with Whataburger, its tagline was always Whataburger’s Whataburger should be!

Only in Texas!

Wordless Wednesday…Pure Joy

People say that Christmas is for and about Children. However, there’s one man who can bring pure joy to children and those of us whose childhood was years ago.

Santa stopped by on Christmas to surprise the children and some of the adults as well.  I kept mum to some of my family members because I wanted to surprise them as well. And of course, from the mouths of babes, one of the younger children shouted out...That's not the real Santa!!!"

Wordless Wednesday…Discovering His World
It seems that in today’s world we find ourselves looking at the tops of our children’s heads…you know what I mean, the heads that are buried in their devices.
Raffe’s dad has a window feeder on his office window and both dad and Raffe are enjoying meeting the different birds who have found this new outdoor buffet.

Wordless Wednesday…The Force Was Not With Us
We walk every morning and some might think that it would get boring…same trees, same squirrels, same walkers.

However, if you keep your eyes open, you never know who or what you’ll see!!!

We saw this “Storm Trooper” (Star Wars for those of you who just arrived on this planet) sitting in the back seat. I couldn’t help but smile and laugh.

Having whimsy in our lives and those who share their whimsical creations makes the world a richer place.

And just for fun…we saw this last year and it’s worth another share!!!

By the way…I also love the cars … (24 comments)

Wordless Wednesday…It’s About Time

Every Fall I look forward to George Souto’s Progression of Fall Colors post as well as Ed Silva’s Litchfield County Fall Colors.

And every year I wait. When we were in Delray Beach, I didn’t expect to see anything but here in Houston, it can be hit-and-miss. Our summer was extremely dry, so I did not have high hopes for any kind of Fall colors.

However, Look what showed up the first week of December!!!

Wordless Wednesday…It’s Not About the Size

Do you remember the first Christmas tree you bought?  It seems that with each year and each new home our tree got bigger and bigger.

I’ll always remember, though, the first Christmas tree Larry and I had…I didn’t have to get on a stool to decorate the top of the tree!

My parent’s neighbor gave us two boxes of ornaments and I hand-painted small wooden ornaments I’d found at a craft store. It wasn't that we couldn’t afford to go out and buy decorations for the tree, we wanted to make it our own. I didn’t want to … (20 comments)

Wordless Wednesday…Happy Feet

Sunday, we walked along the Boardwalk at Towne Lake. It was a nice change of pace for us and even though it was early on a Sunday morning there were others out having breakfast at First Watch or working out at Club Pilates.

We came across this Cha-Cha diagram on the sidewalk by the dock along the lake.

I couldn’t resist trying…and no all I had to drink was coffee!!!

Wordless Wednesday…What Do You Think?

A few weeks ago when we were out at Kickerillo several walkers were all abuzz about the sighting of a Black Swan.

Had someone put something extra in their coffee???
I only had my iPhone with me so the photos aren’t great but I’m taking my “real” camera with me this week so I can get a better shot.

What do you think?  Black Swan or just a big black bird!

Wordless Wednesday…A Special Treat

Finally, this time change has paid off. When we fell back last weekend, my body is still challenging whatever the digital clocks say.

Yesterday (Tuesday) early A.M. we saw that there was a lunar eclipse that we might be able to catch if we got our buns out of bed!
We grabbed our binocs and camera and got to catch a glimpse of it.

I learned that this is the last lunar eclipse until 2025.  And this…

Wordless Wednesday…Benches and Whimsy

Two things I love…unusual benches and anything whimsical.

They don’t have to look or even be comfortable to sit on. For me, they are works of art placed where you least expect them.

Whimsical objects often bring about an unexpected smile…a fond memory of a moment in your life.

Don’t be afraid to allow whimsy into your life and your home!!!

Wordless Wednesday…Pure Joy

My apologies to Yankee fans but the Houston Astros are headed to the World Series for the fourth time in six years. I am nervous and excited all at once.

Watching them play…to put it simply…brings me JOY. A lot has to do with how much fun they have playing the game and how much they enjoy each other.

I love the word JOY and can’t help but smile when I think of the things and people who bring JOY into my life.

Wordless Wednesday…The Pink Month
Even though I write quite a bit about bluebirds, one of my favorite birds has always been the Roseate Spoonbill.

I saw my first one when we moved to South Florida. Now, when I see one, I can’t help but stop and gaze at them.

The roseate spoonbill is thought to get its beautiful color from the carotenoid-rich food they eat, such as shrimp.

I wondered why we often saw roseate spoonbills feeding with other birds, such as egrets and herons. It turns out that they are very social birds!

Want more interesting facts?

When we think of PINK, we are reminded … (20 comments)

Wordless Wednesday…Open Eyes

Lately, on our Sunday walks, we’ve been exploring a different park. Instead of wildlife, there are soccer games, which I suppose could get kind of wild.

Last Sunday, Larry saw a small old bridge that led into the woods. He had to find out where it went. So off I followed, keeping an open eye for snakes with every step I took.

The exit took us over another small bridge and …whew…we were out..back in “civilization.”

Just as we were exiting, I looked down and saw this….

If your eyes are opened, you’ll see
the things worth seeing.

Wordless Wednesday…Everyone Needs a Home

While wandering through some old photos from Green Cay Wetlands in South Florida, I came across this collage.

The message is true.  Everyone needs a home…a place where at the end of the day, when we walk through the door and set our keys down, we know we’ve reached our safe haven.

Houses come in all sizes…Mc Mansions, one-bedroom condos …brand new and begging for updates…rustic, colonial, and builder basics.

But to someone, that is their home…their retreat from their hectic world.

Wordless Wednesday…Lights Out

We love watching our backyard birds (and squirrels). Larry and I do what we can to provide food assistance, water, and shelter (not to mention a nursery for mom and dad bluebirds).

Yesterday we received a Lights Out Action Alert from the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and their Bird-Cast Alert programs.

We’ve recently had hummingbirds stopping by to help fuel their little bodies for their long flights.

Hummingbirds consume half their body weight in bugs and nectar and feed every  10-15 minutes.

The Lights Out Alerts are to protect the many birds as they migrate south (or north in the spring) from striking … (29 comments)

Wordless Wednesday…International Day of Peace

Today is the International Day of Peace as declared by the United Nations. I read somewhere that Peace isn’t just something we celebrate but something we continue to build.

Besides peace in the world (wouldn't that be wonderful)...we can work on peace within our families…our workplace…neighbors…people we don’t even know.

It is up to us to make our own PEACE… learn to say a kind word (sometimes even if you don’t mean it)... offer an olive branch to someone…sit down with someone to discuss and learn, not a lecture.

Peace cannot be kept by force; it can only be achieved … (26 comments)

Wordless Wednesday…to the Beat of a Different Drummer

We were out walking one Sunday at Meyers Park. We like to change things up!

This park, at least where we walked, is less about animal wildlife and more about “human-wildlife”. There are soccer fields, picnic tables, walking paths, and people practicing tai chi and yoga.

I’m glad we went on a Sunday because we got to hear this…

Oh yes…another plus going on a Sunday…we could hear the nearby carillon bells welcoming anyone and everyone.
